Nilambur: The price of areca nut is skyrocketing when compared to previous times. The price touched Rs 430 per kilogram giving hope to the farmers.

The traders are now getting the highest price for areca nut in last 25 years, said Kunhali, a merchant from Akampadam in Malappuram. The ripe areca nut fruit costs Rs 70 per kilogram and raw areca nut fruit fetches Rs 56. The price is likely to go up in the coming days.

As the rainfall and weather were stable this year, almost all plantations in the state had a good yield. However, many areca palms were damaged due to diseases and the availability of areca nuts dropped this time.
