Kannur: The agricultural department has been planning to develop farmlands of 10,760 selected farmers in the state as model farmlands. The plan has been pitched as a holistic intervention and it apparently stands out from the usual measures like providing crop assistance and other subsidies.
The agricultural department has allocated Rs 33.5 crores for the project.10 farmers under each Krishi Bhavan, who have cultivable land ranging from 10 cents to 2 acres and are regularly engaged in agricultural activity will be selected for the project. They will receive expert advice from the department, Kerala Agricultural University, among others in all matters from procurement of seed to sale of harvest.
Financial assistance of Rs 11.712 crores (up to Rs 12,000 per person based on requirements) will be allocated to 9760 farmers in the selected pool. While the remaining 1,000 farmers will get Rs 25,000 each as financial assistance. However, they have to be engaged in integrated farming including poultry and cattle rearing.
