Kochi: The nominations filed by independent candidate Saritha S. Nair in Wayanad and Ernakulam constituencies to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha election have been rejected by the presiding officer. According to the presiding officer, the nominations were rejected as the sentence awarded to her has not been cancelled yet.
Earlier, the presiding officer had found that Saritha S. Nair was imprisoned for two years which is a sufficient reason to reject her nomination. However, her advocate replied that the candidate has filed an appeal over this issue. Though the presiding officer asked for the documents to prove the claim, they could not produce the same. As the time allotted to submit the documents ended, the nominations were rejected.
Saritha was sentenced to prison in connection with related to the solar scam. She had stated that she wants to prove that if crime accused persons can contest polls with political support, she too can do the same.
Saritha had also said that she fights singlehandedly against such criminals in politics and her decision to contest the polls was not made due to wish to be in the parliament.
