Rahul visits Thirunelli temple in Wayanad
Kalpetta: AICC president and UDF candidate in Wayanad Rahul Gandhi who arrived at the constituency on Wednesday as part of election campaign had darshan at the Thirunelli temple and performed rituals at Papanasini river where his late father Rajiv Gandhi’s ashes were immersed.
Rahul arrived at the temple by 10.15 am. He had darshan and repeated the prayers in Malayalam after the priest. He walked about half a km on foot to reach Papanasini river and performed rituals for his late father Rajiv Gandhi. After the rituals, he returned to the temple and received holy offerings.
Security has been beefed up ahead of his visit in the temple and other places. Media was not allowed to go closer on the temple premises. Rahul was accompanied by K C Venugopal, Mullapally Ramachandran and K V Thangabalu.
Rahul arrived at Thirunelli from Kannur on Wednesday morning. He landed on a chopper at the helipad arranged at Thirunelli SAUP School ground. He set out to the temple after going to the rest house. The Special Protection Group (SPG) officials and police also visited the places where Rahul will visit to ensure security arrangements.
Rahul’s father and former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi’s ashes was immersed in Papanasini river years ago. Both Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi had expressed interest to visit the temple on the day of nomination filing. However, they were not allowed to visit due to security reasons.

As part of Rahul’s visit, traffic regulations has been imposed in Thirunelli and Bathery on Wednesday. The district police head informed that large vehicles and multi-axle vehicles are not allowed to enter the area between Appappara and Thirunelli.
Rahul will attend a public meeting at Sultan Bathery. He will visit the assembly segments in Wayanad and Thiruvambadi in Kozhikode and Wandoor in Malappuram which also are part of his constituency.
Rahul will address people at Sulthan Bathery St. Mary’s ground. As the old stage cannot be used due to security reasons, a new stage has been built for him. Earlier, his grandmother Indira Gandhi, father Rajiv Gandhi and mother Sonia Gandhi also had addressed people seeking votes at St. Mary’s ground.
