New Delhi: After hours-long discussions, Congress has decided to field K Muraleedharan in Vadakara. The meeting held on Tuesday morning finalized Muraleedharan after considering several names.
Oommen Chandy has called KPCC president Mullappally Ramachandran to inform Muraleedharan’s consent to contest.
With this, Muraleedharan was announced as the UDF candidate in Vadakara. The leadership was in a dilemma after candidates in Kozhikode and Kannur demanded to field the best candidate at Vadakara. League and RMP had also raised the same demand.
The discussion which considered the names of Vidya Balakrishnan, Bindu Krishna, VM Sudheeran and Advocate Praveenkumar finally reached at K Muraleedharan.
Oommen Chandy and Ramesh Chennithala had returned from Delhi after leaving the final decision to Mullappally in the discussions held in Delhi on Sunday. It was as part of pressurizing Mullappally to contest. But, Mullappally again said that he will not contest.
Meanwhile, there was a chance for conflict within the party if an incompetent candidate is fielded in Vadakara. The meeting held on Tuesday morning had decided to replace Mullappally with Praveenkumar. But, many leaders inquired if Praveenkumar is strong enough to fight against P Jayarajan. As RMP has decided to back UDF to defeat Jayarajan, the party is facing intense pressure. With this, Oommen Chandy intervened in the issue. He contacted Muraleedharan by 11 am.
That discussion had led to the unexpected decision. Muradheeran is also a former MP from Kozhikode. He got support from majority in the meeting as 4 Assembly constituencies in Vadakara Lok Sabha constituency is in Kozhikode district. Oommen Chandy informed the decision to Mullappally after Muraleedharan gave consent. Afterwards, Muraleedharan was decided as the candidate in Vadakara without any more discussions.
