Thiruvananthapuram: Renowned director and screenwriter Saeed Akhtar Mirza has been appointed chairman of KR Narayanan National Institute of Visual Science and Arts (KRNNIVSA), Kottayam.

The state government has appointed him after former chairman Adoor Gopalakrishnan stepped down amid mounting pressure over alleged caste discrimination at the institute.

Mirza had a stint at Pune Film Institute as chairman. He received many film awards and was jury chairman for Kerala State Film Awards 2021.

Higher Education Minister R Bindu reffered him as "a guiding light for students."
