Shashi Tharoor backs Kannur varsity syllabus
Thiruvananthapuram: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has come out in support of the controversial syllabus of Kannur University which has readings of RSS idealogues V D Savarkar and M S Golwalkar.
It is not wrong to read them. What is the point of going to universities if you want to read only what you like, Tharoor asked?
I am commenting as an academician not a politician. Students must critically understand all perspectives. Faculties can ensure that the RSS leaders’ works are not glorified while teaching them.
Some friends disapprove of my stand that academic freedom requires us to read, understand & debate every point of view, including those we disagree with. If we don’t read Savarkar& Golwalkar, on what basis will we oppose their ideas? #KannurUniversity also teaches Gandhi&Tagore.— Shashi Tharoor (@ShashiTharoor) September 12, 2021
We cannot ban books from universities. Works of Gandhi and Nehru are also part of the said syllabus. It would have been wrong if the students were taught only the RSS books, he added.
The university has freezed the syllabus of the third semester students of MA Governance and Politics when it stirred up hornet's nest. The Government has sought an explanation from the vice-chancellor.
