Kochi: Department of Science and Technology under the Ministry of Science and Technology has invited applications for the ‘Scholarship For Higher Education (SHE)’, a component of ‘Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE)’.
A total of 10,000 scholarships are available annually under SHE. Each eligible candidate will receive scholarship having a value of Rs.80,000/- annually. The cash value payable to the SHE scholarship holder is Rs.60,000/- per annum along with a summer time attachment fee of Rs.20,000/- which will be paid for undertaking summer time research project. Selected candidates will be supported for a maximum period of five years starting from 1st year course in B.Sc., B.Sc. (Hons), BS and Integrated course leading to M.S. or M.Sc. or till completion of the course, whichever is earlier. Continuation of the scholarship for selected candidates is based on performance in the examinations conducted and certified by the institution imparting education.
Applicant should have passed Class XII in 2016 from any of the recognized Indian State or Central Boards and should be studying courses in Natural/Basic sciences at three years B.Sc., B.Sc (Hons), four years B.S or five years Integrated M.Sc./M.S programs in any UGC recognized College/ University/ Institution in India. The eligible candidate must be already enrolled into a valid degree level course in Natural / Basic sciences within the scope of INSPIRE Scholarship at any UGC recognized College or University or National Institute in India. The subjects under Basic and Natural Sciences within the scope of INSPIRE Scholarship for pursuing BSc./BS/Int. MSc/Int. MS course include (1) Physics (2) Chemistry (3) Mathematics (4) Biology (5) Statistics (6) Geology (7) Astrophysics (8) Astronomy (9) Electronics (10) Botany (11) Zoology (12) Bio-chemistry (13) Anthropology (14) Microbiology (15) Geophysics (16) Geochemistry (17) Atmospheric Sciences & (18) Oceanic Sciences.
The Scheme does not include courses in Engineering, Medicine, Technology and other Professional or Technical or Applied Science courses.
The eligibility of candidates will be based on one of the different criteria which include (a) performance in Board Examinations within the cut-off threshold (top 1%) for each State or Central Board Examination in the year 2016 at Class XII level and/ or (b) performance in any of the specified Competitive Examinations within stipulated cut off ranks and recipient of various scholarships and medals.

The cut-off of 2016 for respective Boards shall be finalized in due course for evaluation purposes.
Applicants who have scored within a specified rank in a National Level Competitive Examination are also eligible. Those who have come within the top 10,000 Rank, as per Common Merit List (CML) of (i) JEE (Main) (ii) JEE (Advanced) (iii) AIPMT or NEET for Medical can apply.
Those admitted to University at Under-graduate or Integrated M. Sc. program in Natural Sciences and Basic Sciences based on these National Level Competitive Examinations, those admitted based on Other National Level Competitive Examinations for Admission to 4 years BS or 5 years Integrated M.Sc. programs in Basic & Natural Sciences at all Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) within top 10,000 rank in JEE (Advanced), at All Indian Institute of Science Education & Research (IISERs), National Institute of Science Education & Research (NISER), Department of Atomic Energy - Centre for Basic Science (DAE - CBS), All Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojna (KVPY) Fellows, National Talent Search Examination (NTSE) Scholars, International Olympiad Medalists and Jagadis Bose National Science Talent Search (JBNSTS) Scholars are also eligible to apply.
Receipt of Eligibility Note or Eligibility Certificate on INSPIRE Scholarship from respective Board is not mandatory as an eligibility criterion to apply and also do not guarantee the Scholarship. Moreover, top 1% Cut-off of previous year (2015), given would only be used for guidelines purpose.
The selection will be subject to evaluation of each application based on the above eligibility criteria including finalization of actual top 1% cut-off of Class 12 examination 2016 for each Board. In the case of receipt of more than 10,000 eligible applications in the given year, the selection will be on the basis of Board inclusive model within the available number of Scholarships in that year as it has been accepted and implemented for the selection of students passed out in the year 2016.
How to apply
Interested and eligible candidates, who have passed Class XII Board Examination in 2016 and satisfying the qualifying criterion, must apply online in the prescribed format along with the documents listed at http://www.online-inspire.gov.in and following the process prescribed therein. Before filling application form, applicant should scan and store the following documents as separate files. The same needs to be uploaded as required during the Online Application process.

Online application can be submitted latest by 5 pm on 15th January 2017. Applicant should first register in the website www.onlineinspire.gov.in as a ‘New User’. The email ID used for registration must belong to the applicant. The email address must be valid and functional. There is no scope for changing the registered email address in future. All communications shall be sent only to the registered email address. On entering the required details and submitting, applicant will see a message that the user id and password has been sent to the registered email id and using that, the account has to be activated. Subsequent logins can be made using the Registered Email ID as User Name and the registered password.
The applicants may obtain a print out of the submitted online application for his/her records. They are not required to send the printout of the application submitted online or any other documents by Post.
Incomplete or wrongly filled up application or application with lack of essential documents will summarily be rejected. The applicant’s own valid and functional email address must be used for submission of the On-line application. The status of the application will be informed to the applicant’s email that is registered in the On-line portal. More than one application should not be submitted. Those who have passed Class XII examination in the previous years need not apply now.
