Reservation: Kerala HC approves decision to consider all departments of university as one unit
Kochi: Kerala High Court approved the government decision to treat all departments in the Kerala University as a single unit while recruiting faculties.
A division bench of Kerala High Court, comprising justices Jayasankaran Nambiar and Muhammed Riyas, on Tuesday set aside its single bench verdict that the 2014 amendment to the Kerala University Act and a 2017 faculty recruitment notification are invalid.
The latest verdict, which has larger consequences, will remove the blockade to the appointments.
The Kerala government on July 20 in 2014 had amended the Kerala University Act to enable combining the faculty positions in all departments and apply the reservation norms. When reservations are applied to each department, only a few seats or even zero seats are given for communities like ST. This happens because the number of vacancies in the departments is lesser. When the entire campus is considered as one unit, reservations will be applied to a bigger number, resulting in more reserved seats.
