National Essay Competition of SN Bose National Centre

Satyendra Nath Bose National Centre for Basic SciencesSatyendra Nath Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences, Kolkata has invited entries from school students, for the National Essay Competition 2018, on the challenging problems of science, being organized on the occasion of celebration of 125th Birth Anniversary of Professor Satyendra Nath Bose, to be held during 5-6 September, 2018, at Satyendra Nath Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences, Kolkata.

The aim of the essay competition is to induce scientific inclination in the young minds, and motivate them to channelize their energy and creativity in achieving academic excellence.

Indian school Students of classes IX, X, XI and XII can take part in the competition, to be conducted in two categories. Category A will include students of Classes IX and X and category B, students of Classes XI and XII. In each category, the competition will be held in two stages. Stage I is the submission of the written essay and Stage II is the oral presentation by the shortlisted applicants from Stage I.

The essay is to be written on one among the topics, (i) Role of trees in our daily life (ii) Renewable energy sources (iii) Controlling pollution in air, water and light in a better way (iv)The problems and solutions in school level science education in India (v) Amazing world of prime numbers.

Application: Applicant should write a one page essay in English, on one of the five topics specified. The write-up as well as the figure(s), if any, must be the original creations of the applicant. No part of these may be copied from any published article in a book / journal etc. The essay should be computer typed on one side of an A4 size paper in 12 pt font size, with single line spacing. The back side of this paper must include (i) a self-declaration as well as (ii) a certificate from the head of the Institution (Principal / Head Master / Head Mistress) declaring that the applicant is a bonafide student of one of the four classes (IX/X/XI/XII), of the school. The one page document should reach ‘National Essay Competition, 2018; S. N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences; Block-JD, Sector-III, Salt Lake, Kolkata- 700106’; by post, latest by 31st May, 2018.

Selection & Presentation: 15 best entries from each category of A and B will be selected in stage I. The selected applicants will be invited in stage II to make oral presentations (only in English) in S. N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences, Kolkata during 5th & 6th September, 2018. The participant will get a maximum of 20 minutes for the talk, including 15 minutes of presentation, followed by 5 minutes of discussion. The winners of the competition will be decided only on the basis of performances of the applicants in their oral presentations and their essay write-ups will not be considered at this stage.

Prizes: Every applicant selected for stage II will be given a ‘Certificate of Participation’ and book coupons of Rs. 2000/- usable anywhere in India. Three best presentations from each category will be selected for the first, second and the third positions. Silver plaques of sizes large, medium and small will be awarded to the first, second and third rank holders of each category.

Travel & Accommodation: Each outstation applicant invited for stage II should be accompanied by only one of his / her guardians. An outstation applicant together with his / her guardian will be provided with free hospitality -both accommodation and food (breakfast, lunch and dinner) in the Guest House of the Centre for 3 nights (3N4D). Only an outstation applicant will be paid for his / her return train fare in sleeper class by shortest route from the city / town of his / her school to Kolkata.
