Kerala sees record number of students joining Class I
Kalikavu: When reports suggest that the pandemic lockdowns affected school enrollments in the country, Kerala showed a reverse trend.
Kerala recorded the highest enrollment for Ist standard since the last two decades in public schools. 28,492 more kids joined government schools in the state compared to the previous academic year.
In total, 3,05,414 students joined class 1. The state has been witnessing a drop in enrollments in government schools due to the decrease in the young population in the state and also due to the boom of private institutions.
In 2017-’18, as many as 12,798 students joined government schools. However, in 2019-’20, there was a reduction of 3,422. During this academic year, the trend again reversed with 8,459 more kids joining the public school system.
Authorities attribute the change to the Public Education Rejuvenation Programme of the government, started in 2016. From 2017-’18 to 2020-’21, around 6.80 lakh students more joined the public schools.
