Higher education council suggests open university for distance education
Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala State Higher Education Council has suggested to set up an open university for distance education in the state. The other suggestions put forward by the council include publicizing the governing bodies of autonomous colleges, mutual acceptance of the courses, provided by UGC approved institutes and educational institutions of national importance, by the universities.
The report prepared by the panel regarding this was approved by the council that convened under education minister C Raveendranath on Wednesday.
The open university has been suggested similar to the IGNOU model. It will have regional centres at Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kottayam and study centres under them. The regional centres will be established using the facilities of the existing universities. The report in this regard was submitted by a committee under Prof. Fathimath Zuhara.
Students should also be given due importance in the administration of autonomous colleges, suggested the committee presided by Dr Joy Job Kulavelil.
