Thiruvananthapuram: The state education department has revised the conditions for promotion of high school headmasters to higher secondary principals. As per the new condition, if they are to be promoted, then they should have a subject to teach in higher secondary.
An order issued by APM Mohammad Hanish, principal secretary of the general education department, made it compulsory for principals to take classes for eight hours a week.
If there are higher secondary teachers teaching the same subject (as that of the headmasters) at the school, then the headmasters will not be granted promotion.
Earlier, those promoted as principals could opt out of teaching, if their subject was not available. However, this provision has been repealed.
There is also a situation wherein teachers have been continuously filing cases challenging the orders that have refused appointment to headmasters stating that they lack enough periods to teach. Many also secured favourable verdicts too.
Meanwhile, a supernumerary post shall not be created if a post is lost due to the presence of another high secondary school teacher (HSST) to teach the subject of the principal.
One additional post will have to be retained when retaining an HSST junior teacher in the supernumerary post. It could also lead to a situation where principals shall receive salary without taking classes. The current move is aimed at curbing the practice.
