Thiruvananthapuram: Compared to the last academic year, a decrease of 45,573 students was recorded in the enrolment to first standard in the state. A dip of 15,380 and 22,142 students were reported in government and aided schools, respectively. Minister of Education V Sivankutty informed the state legislative assembly that a fall of 8,051 students have been marked in government approved unaided schools here.

A total of 3,48,741 students obtained admission to first standard in the previous academic year, including unaided schools. However, the figures reduced to 3,03,168 students this year. Along with the considerable decline in population, the shift of children to other syllabi after Covid induced lockdown have contributed to the decrease in number of students gaining admission to first standard this year, opined experts.

The data surfaced in the report of the public education department which was prepared based on the attendance details of the sixth working days this academic year.

Compared to last year, a decline of 45,519 students were reported from class 1 to class 10. However, the number of students from class 2 to class 10 have increased. Minister said that 40 government schools in the state have only ten or below 10 students while 109 aided schools are functional in the state.

Usually more students transfer from unaided schools to government and aided schools at fifth and eighth standards. There was a decrease of 7,134 students in fifth standard. A shortage of 669 students have been reported in class 10 of aided schools.
