Kannur: The focus on research score in the Kannur University appointment controversy is pointless, argued Priya Varghese in a latest Facebook post.

“The score was prepared based on the entry of the applicant. It was not physically verified by the university. Since the interview was online, the verification was never done. I could have manipulated that number easily by giving all my write-ups. However, I stuck to the publications on approved journals by the university,” said Priya, who is accused of having received special consideration due to her political connections.

Kannur University had given Priya the first rank in the recruitment to the post of associate professor in Malayalam in the university department. Priya is the wife of KK Ragesh, former MP and private secretary to the chief minister.

Priya said she was very careful about the submission. “I collected the list of approved journals from the university before submitting the research details. I was not sure how far I could go. I kept extra vigil as I am the wife of a communist who always gets audited,” she said.

The assistant professor of Sree Kerala Varma College in Thrissur also said the people who raise allegations against her are now clinging onto the research score as their previous arguments have proven wrong.

The research score is valid only as a cut off to qualify for the interview. The appointment is made based on the interview as per the UGC guidelines, said Priya.

Meanwhile, the university also snubbed the allegations and said the UGC rules were followed thoroughly.

The fresh controversy over the selection of Priya erupted after the Governor sought clarification from the vice-chancellor on the matter.
