Research at National Institute of Design: Apply by September 30
National Institute of Design (NID), an ‘Institute of National Importance’, with Centres at Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and Banglaore, under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India, has invited applications for admission to the second batch of Full time (3 years) and Part time (5 years) PhD Programme in Design for 2019-20.
The PhD programme in Design shall include the priority areas, Design Education (e.g. pedagogy, design for schools), Design Innovation (e.g. in railways), Social Innovation, Design for Craft & culture and Design Practice.
Research Scholars with full fellowship as well as Research Scholars sponsored by Industry, Government and recognised non-Governmental organisations who shall not be eligible for any financial support from the Institute, will be considered for Full-time Research.
Financial support for full-time PhD: Those enrolled in the full-time PhD programme will be eligible for a research fellowship or a stipend, limited to three years. Candidates enrolled in the full-time PhD programme (with fellowship) will have to take up teaching assignments at the Institute and its campuses, based on the recommendation of their guides. Researchers enrolled in the full time PhD programme may seek sponsorship from their employer/ any other organisation for the duration of the programme, provided that the sponsoring organisation shall bear all expenses related to the programme.
Part-time PhD Programme: The part-time PhD programme shall ordinarily be of five years’ duration. Candidates enrolled in the part-time PhD programme will not be entitled to any fellowship or teaching assistantship.
Eligibility: Applicant should hold Master’s degree in Design or Post Graduate Diploma Programme in Design from the National Institute of Design, Advanced Entry Programme or five-five and a half year School Leavers’ Professional Education Programme Diploma in Design from the National Institute of Design OR Master’s degree in Architecture or Fine Arts or Applied Arts with 55 % aggregate marks/equivalent grade 'B' in the UGC 7 point scale or Bachelor’s degree in Design from National Institute of Design or National Institute of Design’s Graduate Diploma Programme in Design with three years’ of professional or teaching experience or both or Four and a half year School Leavers’ Professional Education Programme Diploma in Design with three years of professional or teaching experience or both OR Master’ s degree in Philosophy (in Design) with 55 % marks in aggregate/equivalent grade 'B' in the UGC 7 point scale. Individuals who have successfully completed a Faculty Development Programme in Design having two years or more duration from the National Institute of Design or any other recognised University can also apply.
Those who are scheduled to complete the final year of their qualifying examinations and are awaiting results are also eligible to apply provisionally. Confirmation of selection shall be subject to successful completion of the qualifying exams and securing minimum grade/marks in their qualifying examination and submission of results to the Institute before the commencement of the programme.
Selection: Admission to the programme will be on the basis of a three-stage selection process. The process will assess the design thinking, research ability, knowledge base, and creative skills of the candidates. Final selection will be based on the quality of proposals and suitability of topics to NID’s research priorities.
PhD Proposal: An applicant will have to submit a PhD Proposal with the application. The proposal should explain how the research is relevant and how it could make an original contribution to the field of design. The Research Proposal should be approximately 2000-3000 words in length.
In Stage of the selection process, applicants will be shortlisted on the basis of the eligibility criteria and the proposal submitted. Only shortlisted candidates shall proceed to the next stage.
Stage 2 is the Design Research Test (DRT) to be conducted at NID Ahmedabad or Gandhinagar Campus. DRT primarily evaluates each candidate on General Awareness, Design Aptitude, Research Ability, Basic numeric abilities and Design abilities.
Those shortlisted after the DRT will be invited to appear for an interview and make presentations to a committee at NID, which will be the 3rd stage of selection.
Application Fee: The application fee is Rs.5000/-. For SC/ST and PH categories, it will be Rs.2500/-. Application fee should be paid via a demand draft in favour of ‘National Institute of Design’ payable at Ahmedabad.
Application: Applications can be submitted at www.phdadmissions.nid.edu, latest by 6 pm on 30th September, 2019.
The demand draft and a printout of the application form along with self attested physical copies of all supporting documents along with one recent passport size photographs should be sent in a single envelope with the entry ‘PhD Application’ on the envelope, by speed-post, registered post or courier, to reach ‘PhD Admissions, National Institute of Design, Paldi, Ahmedabad-380 007’, latest by 6 pm on 7th October 2019. Documents to be attached include (i) Research proposal of 2000-3000 words as a hard copy (ii) Recommendation letter from three referees (iii) No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the employer, if applicable.
Admit Cards for Design Research Test (DRT) can be downloaded from www.phdadmissions.nid.edu, form 4 pm on 11th November, 2019.
Design Research Test (DRT) will be held from 1000 hours to 1800 hours on 18th November, 2019.
Interviews and presentations by selected candidates will be during 1000hrs to 1700 hours on 25th, 26th and 27th November, 2019.
Results will be declared on website at 6 pm on 29th November, 2019 on the website.
