Research Admissions at Indian Institute of Astrophysics
Bengaluru: Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), Bangalore, has invited applications from motivated persons with consistently good academic credentials, for admission to two Programmes leading to Ph.D. degrees.
Applications can be submitted for admission to the Ph.D Programme conducted jointly with Pondicherry Central University, Puducherry, and for the Integrated M.Tech - Ph.D (Tech.) Programme to be conducted in collaboration with University of Calcutta, Kolkata.
Applications can be submitted, for these Programmes, subject to the specific eligibility for each of them, given at www.iiap.res.in/newphd/degree.html, by those who expect to complete M.Sc. (Physics) / Integrated M.Sc. (Physics) / B.E. / B.Tech. / M.E. / M.Tech degree by June 2018 or by those who have already completed any of them, with 60% marks from Standard X onwards.
All India rank in the range of 1-250 in GATE or JEST examination or qualification in UGC-CSIR-NET (JRF) exam or currently valid KVPY / INSPIRE fellowship are the other minimum eligibility criteria to apply, in addition to the above.
Upper age limit will be 25 years as on January 1, 2018.
Those selected for Ph.D programme are offered Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) initially for a period of two years and Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) for the next three years. During the first year, they undergo course work on the basics of Astronomy & Astrophysics. The students register with the Pondicherry Central University, Puducherry for their Ph.D degree.
In the Integrated M.Tech-Ph.D (Tech.) Programme in Astronomical Instrumentation, jointly conducted with Calcutta University (CU), Kolkata, the M.Tech degree Programme is a two year / four semester course. The classes for the first and second semesters are being held at the Department of Applied Optics and Photonics, CU. The third and fourth semesters comprise of internship at IIA laboratories and projects at IIA, Bangalore. A student who fulfills the requirements for M.Tech degree and obtained the minimum CGPA may continue for the Ph.D (Tech.) Programme.
Selected students the Integrated M.Tech - Ph.D (Tech.) will be fully supported with a studentship of Rs. 16,000/- pm for the first two years. Students will be provided hostel accommodation and medical facilities. Tuition fee will be student’s responsibility.
Admission Test: Admission to the Programmes is based on the IIA Screening Test (IIAST) to be held on Saturday, December 09, 2017 (Saturday) at Centres across the country.
When attending IIAST, applicants are required to carry their photo-ID card (like College ID, Students card, Passport). Those without a suitable photo-id will not be permitted to write the exam. Candidates should reach the examination hall before 9 am. They will only be allowed to use pencils during the exams.
Examination results will be posted around, December 18, 2017.
Interview: Those short listed based on their performance in the IIAST will be called for personal interview in IIA, Bangalore. Personal interviews for the Ph.D. Programme will be held in the first week of January 2018, and that for the M.Tech-Ph.D. Programme (conducted jointly with University of Calcutta) will be held during May 2018. Those attending interview, will be provided second class train fare/bus fare by the shortest route.
Application: Online application can be submitted at the appropriate link at https://www.iiap.res.in/phds_2017_sept/ latest by 5.30 pm on October 22, 2017. A person can apply to one Programme only.
Applicants will have to mention the names and contact addresses of two referees for Recommendation letters. They must be persons familiar with academic abilities of the applicant and should be able to objectively assess the suitability for a research career, of the applicant. Applicant should let them know that if the applicant is selected for the interview, IIA will contact them independently and request them to submit the online Confidential Assessment Form. Suitable referees will be (i) a Lecturer or a Professor who had recently taught a science or engineering course for at least one semester (ii) An academic or technical person with whom applicant has carried out a scientific/technical project for a period of minimum three months.
Applications without scanned copy of stamp / passport size photograph of applicant, X, XII, UG, PG mark sheets, GATE / UGC-CSIR-NET (JRF) / JEST / KVPY / INSPIRE result, will be rejected.
