NIUS Physics Programme of Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education: Apply by February 20
National Initiative on Undergraduate Science (NIUS) has invited applications for the 17th batch of the NIUS Physics programme for 2020-21, designed to provide extended nurture and guidance to undergraduate students in Physics.
In this programme students attend nurture camps organized by Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) TIFR, Mumbai, and work on proto-research student projects during their vacations over a period of about two years, during June 2020 to December 2021.
Eligibility: Applicant should be first year Undergraduate students who are pursuing any of the following degree (i) 3 year B.Sc/B.Sc (H) with Physics as one of the subjects (ii) 4 year B.S./B. Tech./B.E. in Physics/Applied Physics/ Engineering Physics (iii) 5 year M.S./M.Sc. (Integrated) with Physics as one of the subject and (iv) 4 or 5 year B.Tech./B.E. any branch of Engineering/Technology, with a strong interest in Physics.
Applicants should have at least 60% marks or equivalent grades in Class X and Class XII examinations.
Selection Criterion: Each application will be examined in depth, independently by at least two members of the committee considering (i) Performance in STD X and XII examination (ii) Recommendations from two referees (iii) a 250 word write up to explain and justify student's interest in research and development (iv) Additional qualifications like KVPY, INSPIRE, National Graduate Physics Examination (NGPE), Orientation cum Selection Camp (OCSC0 and International Olympiads, etc.
Based on the above, about 30 students will be selected from the 3 year B.Sc./B.Sc.(H) with Physics as one of the subjects; about 28 students will be selected from the 4 year B.S./B.E./B.Tech. in Physics/Applied Physics/Engineering Physics and 5 year M.S./M.Sc. (Integrated); about 7 students will be selected from the 4 or 5 year B.Tech./B.E. any Branch of Engineering/ Technology. In addition, about 5 best performers from IAPT-National Graduate Physics Examination (NGPE) 2020, who are in first year of their 3 year B. Sc. /B. Sc. (H) course will also be selected.
The list of selected students will be made available on the HBCSE-NIUS website by March 25, 2020 and an email invitation will be sent to each selected applicant by March 31, 2020.
The first camp will be held at HBCSE, Mumbai from June 3 to June 19, 2020. This camp will be an exposure and enrichment camp where leading scientists will offer short courses on core topics in Physics. There will also be a laboratory course based on “Experimental Problem Solving” approach. In addition, there will be project related enrichment lectures.
The students selected at the end of the first camp will carry out project work under the supervision of the mentor during the subsequent camps.
