Graduate School Admissions at TIFR: Apply by October 12
Mumbai: The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), India's premier institution for advanced research in fundamental sciences, has announced the admission to the Graduate programmes, leading to the award of Ph.D., Integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D. as well as M.Sc. degree in certain subjects through the nationwide Graduate School Admissions (GS-2018) Test to be held on Sunday, December 10, 2017.
Graduate Programmes are available at TIFR at the Mumbai campus and various National Centres of TIFR, in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer & Systems Sciences (including Communications and Applied Probability) and Science Education.
The subjects and the programmes available and the eligibility, are as follows:
Mathematics (Ph.d. and Integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D. Programs) at (i) School of Mathematics, TIFR Mumbai (http://www.math.tifr.res.in) (ii) Centre for Applicable Mathematics (CAM), Bengaluru (http://math.tifrbng.res.in) (iii) International Centre for Theoretical Sciences (ICTS), Bengaluru (http://www.icts.res.in) (Only Ph.D. program)
Eligibility: For Ph.D: M.A/M.Sc/M.Tech; For I-Ph.D: B.A./B.Sc./B.E./B.Tech. (Students already having/completing M.Sc. degree by July 2018 are not eligible).
Physics (Ph.d. and Integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D. Programs) at (i) Department of Astronomy & Astrophysics (ii) Department of Condensed Matter Physics & Materials Science (iii) Department of High Energy Physics (iv) Department of Nuclear & Atomic Physics and (v) Department of Theoretical Physics, all at TIFR, Mumbai Campus (http://www.tifr.res.in/~sbp) (vi) National Centre for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA), Pune (http://www.ncra.tifr.res.in) (vii) TIFR Centre for Interdisciplinary Sciences (TCIS), Hyderabad (http://www.tifrh.res.in) (viii) Theoretical and experimental activities in physical, chemical, biological and engineering sciences within and across disciplines (ix) International Centre for Theoretical Sciences (http://www.icts.res.in).
For Ph.D.: M.Sc./M.S. in Physics, or equivalent, on completion of programmes(s) of duration not less than 5 years in total.
For I-Ph.D: M.E./M.Tech./B.Sc./B.S./B.E./ B.Tech./B.Chem. in Physics, Engineering Physics, or equivalent degree, on completion of programme(s) of duration not less than 3 years in total.
Any other degree in Science / Engineering / Medicine, or equivalent, on completion of programme(s) of duration not less than 3 years in total
In addition, I-Ph.D. candidates with not less than four or more years of university education who clear the written test may be considered by TCIS for their Ph.D. program.
In addition to the admissions through this nationwide examination in December, some admissions in Physics based on GATE / NET / JEST scores are also possible. Details of these admission procedures will be available on the websites of TIFR Mumbai, ICTS, TCIS and NCRA, separately at appropriate times.
Students applying for Physics also have the option to be considered for the Graduate Training Programme (GTP) of the India-based Nueutrino Observatory (INO).

Chemistry (Ph.D. and Integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D. Programs) at (i) Department of Chemical Sciences, TIFR, Mumbai (http://www.tifr.res.in/~dcs) (ii) TIFR Centre for Interdisciplinary Sciences (TCIS), Hyderabad (http://www.tifrh.res.in)
For Ph.D.: M.Sc./B.E./B.Tech./M.Pharm or equivalent degree; For I-Ph.D.: B.Sc./B.Pharm./B.S. degree or equivalent degree. Those with B.E./B.Tech degrees can optionally get an M.Sc. degree by fulfilling necessary requirements.
Biology (Ph.D., Integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D. and M.Sc. For Ph.D.: Masters in Basic Science (M.Sc. Physics/Chemistry/Any branch of Biology) or Bachelors in Applied Science. These include, M.Sc.(Ag.), B.Tech., B.E., B.V.Sc., B.Pharma. (4 years course), MBBS, BDS, M.Pharma;
For I-Ph.D./M.Sc.: Bachelors in any Basic Science (Physics/Chemistry/Any branch of Biology).
For M.Sc. Wildlife Biology & Conservation: Indian nationals who have a Bachelor’s degree in any discipline (with a minimum of 60% in core subjects) and a strong interest in wildlife research and conservation. Graduate nationals for Central, South and Southeast Asian countries, with similar qualifications, are also eligible to apply
Candidates will be shortlisted for interview based on written test marks, CV and Scientific Write-up.
Computer & Systems Sciences (including Communications and Applied Probability) - Ph.D. program at School of Technology & Computer Science (STCS), TIFR, Mumbai (http://www.tcs.tifr.res.in)
For Ph.D: B.Tech./B.E./M.Tech./M.E./M.C.A./M.Sc. or equivalent degree in Computer Science / Electronics & Communications Engineering / Electrical Engineering or related branches. Exceptionally well qualified students with B.Tech./B.E./M.Tech./M.E./M.Sc. degrees in other disciplines may also be considered. Exceptionally well qualified students with a three year degree in related subjects may be considered for I–Ph.D.

Those in the final year of qualifying degree can also apply unless otherwise mentioned. Those not holding a Master's degree and admitted to a Ph.D./Int. Course duration: Typical course duration for Ph.D. Program is 5 years, for Integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D. Program, 6 years and for M.Sc. as specified for the respective programmes.
Admission Procedure: The admissions procedure (in all subjects, except Science Education) consists of a written test at one of the several nationwide centres, followed by interviews of shortlisted candidates. The written test will be held on December 10, 2017, at Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Bhubaneshwar (2 centres), Chandigarh, Chennai, Cochin, Delhi (4), Guwahati, Haldwani, Hyderabad, Indore, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata (4), Madurai, Mangalore, Mumbai, Nagpur, Patna, Pune, Varanasi and Visakhapatnam. Test Timings: Test is Physics, Chemistry, Computer & Systems Sciences and M.Sc. (Wildlife Biology & Conservation) will be held in the Morning Session from 09.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. Test in Biology (2:30 p.m. to 04:30 p.m) and Mathematics (2:30 p.m. to 05:30 p.m), will be held in the Afternoon Session. For Biology, the TIFR Nationwide Entrance Examination is also called the Joint Graduate Entrance Examination for Biology and Interdisciplinary Life Sciences (JGEEBILS). Results of the entrance examination will be announced on January 31, 2017 and students shortlisted for interview will be intimated by email. Shortlisted candidates will be called for interviews to be held during end-February to early-April, 2018. Exact dates would be announced later.
Additional Mode of Admissions (Beyond Gs2018):
Systems Science: GATE score based applications in Systems Science (including Communications and Applied Probability): Engineering students with exceptional performance in GATE examination of 2016-2018 in Electrical, Electronics and Communications Engineering, Mathematics may apply for the Ph.D. program without appearing for the TIFR Entrance Test. The link for GATE score based applications will be made available on TIFR website on February 5, 2018. Last date for applying will be two weeks after the GATE 2018 results are displayed on their website. In case a student takes the Systems Science TIFR Entrance Test and also submits a GATE score based application, the better of the two performances will be considered.
Biology: GATE score based applications in Ecology and Evolution: Students with exceptional performance in GATE examination of 2016-2018 in Ecology and Evolution may apply for the Ph.D. program in Biology at the National Centre for Biological Sciences without appearing for the TIFR Entrance Test. The link for GATE score based applications will be made available on the NCBS website on February 5, 2018. Last date for applying will be two weeks after the GATE 2018 results are displayed on their website.
Physics: In addition to the admissions through this nationwide examination in December 2017, some admissions in Physics based on GATE / NET / JEST scores are also possible. Details of these admission procedures will be available on the websites of TIFR Mumbai, ICTS, TCIS and NCRA, separately at appropriate times.
Academic year: For Ph.D. and I-Ph.D. programmes, the academic year starts on August 1, every year. The academic year for M.Sc. programme begins on July 1, every year.
Fellowship: Ph.D. Students receive a monthly fellowship of Rs 25,000/- (enhanced to Rs 28,000/- after registration). I-Ph.D. Students receive a monthly fellowship of Rs 16,000/- for the first year. At the end of the first year, upon satisfactory performance, the fellowship is enhanced to Rs 25,000/- per month (further raised to Rs 28,000/- after registration for Ph.D.). M.Sc. (Biology) Students receive a monthly fellowship of Rs 16000/-. M.Sc. (Wildlife Biology & Conservation) Students receive a monthly fellowship of Rs 12000/-.
Accommodation is provided to Ph.D. and I-Ph.D. students only, at a nominal cost.

Application Fee: Application Fee for male applicants is Rs 600/- for online applications and Rs 650/- for manual applications. For females, it is Rs 100/- for online and manual applications and can be paid online through internet banking or by Debit/Credit Card or by sending Demand Draft.
Application Procedure: Application can be submitted online at http://univ.tifr.res.in/gs2018/Student_Login/Student_Login.htm, latest by October 12, 2017.
Multiple registrations should not be made for the same subject.
Students may appear for the written test in multiple subjects if the timings do not clash, by submitting separate application (including Demand Draft) for each subject. In case of online applicants, students will have to re-register with a different email id.
Manual Applications: Those from remote areas who do not have access to internet may apply manually. They may send a request for application form (without DD) along with a self-addressed envelope (size 25cm x 17cm) with stamps worth Rs 20/- affixed, in a cover super-scribed ‘GS-2018 (Subject)’, to, ‘Admissions Section, National Centre for Biological Sciences, UAS-GKVK Campus, Bellary Road, Bangalore 560065, for Biology and to ‘University Cell, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Homi Bhabha Road, Colaba, Mumbai-400005’, for other subjects, except Science Education.
The filled-in application form should be sent along with DD and two passport size photographs (one pasted on the application and one stapled to it) to the concerned addresses.
Fee payment: Application fee can be paid online through internet banking or by Debit/Credit Card. Online payment link will be active up to October 18, 2017. If paying Application fee Online, after the online payment transaction is successful, applicant must login to the account at the website by using reference code as user id and check the payment status of the application. Those who wish to apply online and make payment by Demand Draft may send the Demand Draft with their name, reference code and telephone number written behind it.
If making payment by Demand Draft, for Biology, DD should be drawn on State Bank of India in favour of ‘National Centre for Biological Science’ payable at Bangalore, and for other subjects, the DD should be drawn on State Bank of India in favour of ‘Tata Institute of Fundamental Research’, payable at Mumbai. DDs may be sent by speed post/courier with name, reference code and telephone number written behind it. DDs sent by post/courier will be accepted up to October 20, 2017. Instructions for downloading/printing of Hall tickets will be intimated by email, only after receipt of application fee/approval of fee waiver.
Hall Ticket download link will be active from November 10, 2017.

GATE Scored based applications to Systems Science (including Communications and Applied Probability) will open on February 5, 2018 and will close 2 weeks after GATE2018 results are declared.
