Entries can be submitted till September 8, 2019 for the 7th edition of the Euraxess Science Slam India Competition.
A science slam is a scientific talk where researchers compete to present their work in front of a non-expert audience. The slam is a way to show the engaging and fascinating side of research to the wider public.
The Euraxess Science Slam India 2019 is organised jointly by Birla Institute of Management Technology (BIMTECH), the Consulate General of the Federal Republic Germany, Bengaluru, Global Innovation and Technology Alliance (GITA), Goethe-Zentrum Trivandrum, India Bioscience and The World Bank Group.
The competition enables researchers to come out of the lab and off the desk and communicate their research in a creative way. The entries should be in the form of videos.
Eligibility: The competition is open to participants from all nationalities and all research fields, including Social Sciences and Humanities, Life Sciences and Physical Sciences and Engineering, based in India.
Applicant should be at least 18 years old and should be a MA/M.Sc. candidate (research based or mixed) or PhD candidate or PhD holder working in universities, research institutes or private sector or working in related careers in India. A participant can send only one entry.
‘Virtual’ Pre-selection: Applicant has to produce a video introducing their research in an original and entertaining way. The video must not exceed 5 minutes in length. Participants are free to choose presentation styles such as, dance, acting, poetry, singing, live experiment, other etc; and equipment as they see fit. Submissions must clearly show the participant presenting his or her research in a manner chosen by her or him. Animation only is not permitted.
Those selected from ‘Virtual’ Pre-selection, will receive science communication training and will be invited to participate in a 1-day workshop on Science Communication to be held in Pune on 18th October 2019. The 5 finalists will get the opportunity to compete in the ‘Live’ Slam in Trivandrum on 30th November, 2019.
Entry submission: Applicants are to upload their pre-selection video via Dropbox or Vimeo and share the link to the video with email@example.com or send the video directly to firstname.lastname@example.org, indicating in either case in the subject of the message: ‘EURAXESS Science Slam submission’ and their full name. The accompanying email must contain the following information: (i) Applicant first name; (ii) Applicant last name; (iii) Applicant title; (iv) Gender; (v) Career level; (vi) Institute/University/Company; (vii) Presentation full title; (viii) Research field; (ix) Maximum five keywords related to the research project/work; (x) Nationality; (xi) Source of information for the EURAXESS Science Slam.
A notification email acknowledging reception of the video will be sent within 5 working days. Submissions are possible till 8th September 2019.
The video entry should not exceed 300 seconds (maximum file size 20 MB); be done in English; Feature only the person who is to present on the day of the finals of the EURAXESS Science Slam India 2019; Start with the statement of the author's name, research position and home/host institution if there is one; Be a shorter/synthetic version or a ‘teaser’ of the actual presentation (performance) to be made during the real slam event on 30th November 2019.
The review panel for the online competition (i.e. pre-selection panel for the live finals) will be comprised of a team of research scientists and/or administrators from India and the EURAXESS India Country Representative. The review panel will select up to 5 finalists from all submissions received by the end of the submission deadline. Submitted videos will be assessed based on fixed criteria.
The Science Communication workshop: The 5 selected finalists will be invited to participate in a 1-day workshop in Pune on 18th October 2019. During the workshop the finalists will get a short training on science communication skills, and will have the opportunity to do a short live performance of their slam, under the guidance of a qualified science communication trainer.
The Live Finals: The 5 finalists will compete at the Live Finals of the EURAXESS Science Slam India 2019 to be held on 30th November 2019 in Trivandrum. A return economy flight and accommodation (2 nights) will be provided by EURAXESS India for the finalists based outside Trivandrum.
The 5 finalists will present live in front of a non-expert audience composed of members of the research community and of the wider public: The presentations will be done by one person only. Every presentation will be done in English. The 1st prize will be awarded to the best performer as decided by the audience and the jury panel. The runners up will also receive exciting prizes. Each presentation shall not exceed 10 minutes. Presentations can be supported by video and audio material, ppt. slides and any other kind of media available, as well as by scientific equipment, in accordance with the venue's capacity and security measures. After each presentation there could be questions by the review panel and the audience.
The jury panel for the live competition will be comprised of a team of research scientists and/or administrators from India and the EURAXESS India Country Representative.
The first prize: The winner of the ‘Live’ finals will be awarded the first prize. The first prize consists of the following components: A free round-trip to Europe in the spring of 2020 (most likely in June). During the stay in Europe, a visit to a research institute of the winner's choice within the European Union.
EURAXESS will cover the following expenses: The economy round-trip flight to Europe. The flight will be arranged from the Indian city the winner is based in at the time in question. The winner will receive the lump sum of 1000 EUR to cover the costs for the required visa(s), accommodation and food as well as Inner-European travels during the stay in Europe and the respective city where the meeting with a research organisation of the winner's choice within the European Union takes place. The prize will not be transferable to another person.
