Bachelor/Diploma admissions at NID: Apply by November 7
National Institute of Design (NID) has invited applications for admission to the Bachelor of Design (B.Des) and Graduate Diploma Programmes in Design (GDPD) for 2020.
NID at Ahmedabad with extension campuses at Bengaluru and Gandhinagar, is an ‘Institute of National Importance’, as well as an autonomous institute under the Department of Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India. NID at Adhra Pradesh, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Assam are independent autonomous institutes under DPIIT.
National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad offers the Bachelor of Design (B.Des.) Programme of 4 years duration while the NIDs at Andhra Pradesh (Amaravati with the Transit campus at Nagarjuna Uiversity), Haryana (Kurukshetra with transit campus at Umri), Madhya Pradesh (Bhopal), Assam (jorhat) offer full time Graduate Diploma Programme in Design (GDPD) of four-year duration.
B.Des. programme is offered at NID Ahmedabad with the following areas of specialization:
Faculty of Communication Design: Animation Film Design (19 seats); Exhibition Design (13); Film & Video Communication (13) and Graphic Design (19); Faculty of Industrial Design: Ceramic & Glass Design (13); Furniture & Interior Design (13); Product Design (19); Faculty of Textile, Apparel, Lifestyle and Accessory Design: Textile Design (19). Total number of seats for B.Des for Indian Nationals is 125.
For Graduate Diploma Programme in Design (GDPD) at NIDs at Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Assam, the areas of specialisation include (i) Industrial Design (ii) Communication Design and (iii) Textile & Apparel Design. The GDPD programme at the 4 NIDs has 75 seats each for only Indian nationals including all categories.
Those admitted to the B.Des/GDPD programme will be required to attend a mandatory Foundation programme of one-year duration. Allotment of a specialisation of choice is based on a candidate’s merit and choice only after successful completion of the foundation programme.
Admission to all of these courses is on the basis of the candidates’ performance in the two-stages of Design Aptitude Test aimed at assessing the knowledge, skills and behavioural abilities of candidates. Stage 1 will be the Design Aptitude Test (DAT) Prelims to be conducted at various test centres across India. Stage 2 is the Design Aptitude Test (DAT) Mains. Those candidates shortlisted after the DAT Prelims will be invited to appear for the Stage 2- DAT Main exams.
Eligibility: For Indian Nationals in General and General Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category, only those born on or after 1st July 2000 are eligible to apply. For those in Other Backward Class-Non Creamy Layer (OBC-NCL), Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe(ST), those born on or after 1st July 1997 and for those in PwD Reserved Category, those born on or after 1st July 1995 can apply.
Applicant should have passed or should be appearing for Higher Secondary (10+2) during 2019-20 in any stream (Science, Arts, Commerce, Humanities etc.) from any recognised board of education such as CBSE, IB, ICSE or equivalent
Examinations considered equivalent to these include (i) Final examination of the 10+2 system under a central or state board recognised by the Association of Indian Universities (ii) Intermediate or two-year pre-university examination under a board or university recognised by the Association of Indian Universities (iii) Final examination of the two-year course of the Joint Services Wing of the National Defence Academy (iv) Senior secondary school examination under the National Institute of Open Schooling, with a minimum of five subjects (v) Any public school, board or university examination completed in India or in any foreign country recognised as equivalent to the 10+2 system by the Association of Indian Universities (vi) H.S.C. vocational examination (vii) General Certificate Education (GCE) examination at the Advanced (A) level taken in London, Cambridge or Sri Lanka (vii) AICTE approved three-year Full time Diploma after Class X offered by Board of Technical Education of any state in India or Union Territories
Those who have completed final examinations for class XII (or equivalent) outside India or from a board not specified above should produce an equivalence certificate from the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) confirming that the examination they have passed is equivalent to the Class XII examination conducted in India. This certificate is required to be submitted at the time of document verification.
Applicants must have passed their Class XII examination (higher secondary (10+2)) or equivalent at the time of appearing in personal counselling scheduled in June 2020. Any candidate who has not passed their final board exam or equivalent before the in-person counseling will not be eligible for admission.
Reservation: Seats are reserved for Indian applicants of General-EAS (10%), OBC (27%), SC (15%) and ST (7.5%) categories.
The medium of instruction at NID is English.
Application: Applications can be submitted at www.admissions.nid.edu till 2 pm on 7.11.2019, in four stages (i) Signing up/Registration (ii) Filling the Online Application Form (iii) Uploading Documents & signature (iv) Paying Application Fee & Printing.
Application Fee: Application fee is Rs.2000/- for General, General-EWS and OBC-NCL categories. It is Rs.1000/- for SC; ST; PwD categories. The above fees are applicable to applicants of all 5 institutes. The Application fees can be paid online by debit/credit card or offline by Demand Draft in favour of ‘All India Management Association’ payable at New Delhi. The details of the Demand Draft have to be filled in the online application form, before 2 pm on 7th November 2019 (Thursday), to complete the submission process.
Applicant should save the Application Form as a PDF File and print it and keep it for future reference. Those paying fee by DD, have to complete the application process and must send the demand draft and a printout of the application form in a single envelope to ‘The Project Manager-CMS; All India Management Association, Management House, 15, Link Road, Lajpat Nagar Part 3, New Delhi 110 024’, via Speed/Registered Post/Courier, so as to reach before 4 pm on 13th November, 2019 (Wednesday).
Those who have made online payment of application fee via debit/credit card are not required to send the print-out of their application form.
Online application can be submitted after 2 pm on 7.11.2019 till 2 pm on 13th November 2019 (Wednesday) on payment of late fees in addition to the normal fees. The total amount including the late fee to be paid in this period would be double the fee to be paid normally. The amount can be paid only online, via debit/credit card only.
Applicants will be given an opportunity to review and correct their information in the application form from 6 pm on 13th November, 2019 to 6 pm on 15th November, 2019. However, the information related to eligibility criteria, date of birth, category, email id, and Nationality/Citizenship cannot be modified at this stage.
DAT Structure: DAT (Prelims) will be conducted from 10 am to 1 pm on 29th December, 2019 (Sunday). DAT prelims paper is a 3 hour test of 100 marks which evaluates the Design aptitude of the candidate. It comprises of a mix of objective and subjective questions. The question paper is in English. Based on the DAT Prelims scores, separate merit lists shall be prepared for each category. Only shortlisted candidates will be eligible to appear for the DAT Mains exam as per the schedule announced.
The DAT Prelims will be conducted at Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Dehradun, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Kurukshetra, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi, Thiruvananthapuram and Vijayawada.
DAT Prelims result for B.Des and GDPD will be announced at 1600 hrs on 19th March 2020 (Thursday).
DAT Mains: Based on the scores obtained in the DAT Prelims, eligible candidates will be shortlisted for the DAT Mains. The Admit Card for shortlisted candidates will be available for download only on the official NID admissions website (http://admissions.nid.edu).
The DAT mains, to be held between 29th April 2020 and 3rd May 2020, will consist of tests in multiple formats in a studio set up. The tests will be conducted over a maximum period of three days and will be held at any of the Centres of NID. The total marks of the test will be out of 100. The tests will be conducted in English only.
In the final rank list, DAT Prelims will get 30 % and DAT Final, 70% weightage. DAT Mains result for B.Des and GDPD will be announced at 1400 hrs on 28th May 2019 (Thursday).
Counselling for admission will be on 5th and 6th June, 2020.
