Admissions at Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology: Apply by June 17
Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), Valiamala, Thiruvananthapuram- 695547, has invited applications for admission to the Undergraduate courses offered by the Institute for 2019-20.
The Undergraduate Programmes offered at the Institute include 4 year B. Tech in (i) Aerospace Engineering (ii) Electronics and Communication Engineering (Avionics), each with 66 seats and 5 year Dual Degree (B.Tech in Engineering Physics + Master of Science in Astronomy and Astrophysics/Solid State Physics or M.Tech in Earth System Science/Optical Engineering with 22seats. There is no exit option with a B.Tech degree in Engineering Physics. However, based on academic performance, Director, IIST has the discretion not to promote students with unsatisfactory performance to the Masters’ level. These students may be allowed to exit with a B.Tech degree in Engineering Physics with specified norms worked out by the Department and approved by the Academic Council and Board of Management of IIST.
Seats are reserved for Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBC) belonging to Non-Creamy Layer (NCL), Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and Persons with Disabilities (PD-Horizontal Reservation)
Eligibility: Applicant must be an Indian citizen. Those belonging to General, EWS and OBC-NCL categories must have been born on or after October 1, 1994. Those belonging to SC/ ST and PD categories must have been born on or after October 1, 1989.
Applicant must have secured at least 75% aggregate marks in the Class XII/equivalent Board examination. SC, ST and PD applicants need only 65% aggregate marks. The marks scored in (i) Physics (ii) Chemistry (iii) Mathematics (iv) a language (if the candidate has taken more than one language, then the language with the higher marks will be considered) (v) Any subject other than the above four (the subject with the highest marks will be considered) will be considered for calculating the aggregate marks. Qualifying Examinations: Any one of the following will be accepted as the Qualifying Examination:
(i) The final examination of the 10+2 system, conducted by any recognized central/ State Board, such as Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi; Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, New Delhi; etc.
(ii) Intermediate or two-year Pre-University examination conducted by a recognized Board/University.
(ii) Final examination of the two-year course of the Joint Services Wing of the National Defense Academy.
(iii) Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the National Institute of Open Schooling with a minimum of five subjects.
(iv) Any Public School/ Board/ University examination in India or in any foreign country recognized as equivalent to the 10+2 system by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
(v) H.S.C. vocational examination
(vi) General Certificate Education (GCE) examination (London/ Cambridge/ Sri Lanka) at the Advanced (A) level.
(vii) High School Certificate Examination of the Cambridge University or International Baccalaureate Diploma of the International Baccalaureate Office, Geneva.
In case the relevant Qualifying Examination is not a public examination, the candidate must have passed at least one public (Board or Pre-University) examination at an earlier level.
Applicants should have appeared for the Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced)-2019 conducted by IITs and secured the minimum prescribed marks.
Application: Applications can be submitted online at http://admission.iist.ac.in latest by 11 am on 17.6.2019.
Applicants have to first register at http://admission.iist.ac.in through ‘Undergraduate Admission-2019’ link. Successfully registered applicants will be given a system generated IIST Registration Number. Candidates need to specify a password.
Registration Fee: Registration Fee for Male applicants in General/EWS/ OBC-NCL is Rs.600/-. For Female applicants in General/EWS/ OBC-NCL and all SC/ ST/ PD candidates, it is Rs.300/-.
Registration Fee can be paid through e-payment mode through the ‘Pay Registration Fee’ link. Receipt of payment will be confirmed through registered E-mail and mobile number.
Rank List: Rank list will be published at 5 pm on 19.6.2019. Category-wise IIST Admission Rank List will be generated only for those eligible candidates who are successfully registered online and have paid the Registration Fee. IIST Admission Rank List will be prepared based on the aggregate marks scored in JEE (Advanced) 2019 Examination subject to satisfying the minimum marks prescribed. Tie between candidates securing the same aggregate marks will be resolved by considering higher marks in Mathematics, higher marks in Physics; higher rank in JEE (Main) 2019 Examination, in that order.
Filling-in of Branch Preferences: Candidates whose names appear in IIST Admission Rank List have to fill in their choice of branch in order of preference for the Undergraduate and Dual Degree Programmes latest by 1200 hrs on 20.6.2019. After the culmination of the specified dates given, the preferences will be locked. No further change of choice/ preference will be entertained. It is not mandatory to fill-in all three choices.
Seat Allotment/ Acceptance Rounds: Detailed schedule for seat allotment/ acceptance rounds are given in the Admission Brochure. Candidates who are satisfied with the seat allotment are required to choose the ‘Freeze’ option and proceed to confirm seat acceptance. Candidates who choose the ‘Freeze’ option will not be further considered for their higher preferences, if any. Candidates who wish to be considered for their higher preferences but would like to confirm their allotted seat are required to choose the ‘Slide’ option and proceed to confirm seat acceptance. Based on the vacancies available and on the basis of merit, the branch choice will automatically, ‘Slide Up’, as per the preference order filled in by the candidates. This will also hold after joining IIST till the closing of UG Admission-2019 on 25th July 2019. Candidates opting for the ‘Freeze’ or ‘Slide’ options during a seat allocation round are required to accept the seat by following the process prescribed. Accordingly, candidates are required to make an online payment of First Semester Fee amounting to Rs. 48400/- before the specified date/time. The above payment is to be made through e-payment mode only and should be done by visiting the online application portal (http://admission.iist.ac.in) and clicking on the ‘First Semester Fee’ link. Receipt of payment will be confirmed through registered E-mail and mobile number. Failure to remit the First Semester Fee will amount to forfeiting the allotted seat and candidate will not be considered for any further seat allotment.
Candidates are required to upload scanned copies of the following documents before the specified date/ time listed in Table 8 of Section 11 of the Admission Brochure.
- Class X certificate if the date of birth is mentioned in it OR birth certificate
- Class XII (or equivalent examination) mark sheets (for those who appeared for this examination in 2018 and/or 2019)
- Class XII (or equivalent examination) certificate (for those who appeared for this examination in 2018 and/or 2019)
- Category (EWS/OBC-NCL/SC/ST/PD) certificates.
Documents should be uploaded by clicking on the ‘Upload Documents’ link. Candidates are also required to choose the Reporting Centre where they propose to go for certificate verification. On successful completion of the above steps, a provisional ‘Seat Allotment Letter’ will be generated. The candidates are required to download the same and carry with them to the Reporting Centres. Entry to Reporting Centres will not be allowed without this letter. Candidates are required to report to any of the Reporting Centres listed in Table 7 in Section 10 of the Admission Brochure for the verification of original mark sheets and certificates specified above. Contact details of centres will be uploaded on the website on or before opening of registration and also appear in the provisional Seat Allotment Letter.
After verification of certificates, the Reporting Centres will issue an ‘Admit Card’ which has to be produced at the time of joining IIST. All registered candidates who are in the published Waiting List are required to confirm their willingness to be considered in the subsequent rounds of seat allotment by logging into the Online Admission portal and selecting the ‘Re-Validate’ option on specified dates given in Table 8 and 9 of the Brochure. Candidates who do not ‘Re-Validate’ their registrations within the specified dates will no longer be included in the subsequent Waiting List and hence shall not be considered for further admission.
Forfeiture of accepted Seats: Candidates who have accepted the seat by remitting the First Semester Fee and who wish to forfeit their accepted seat can visit the Online Admission portal and select the ‘Withdrawal’ option and fill the Withdrawal Form indicating their bank account details for fee refund. Processing charges (as per UGC guidelines), will be deducted from the paid First Semester Fee and the remaining amount refunded.
Fees Structure: The fee per semester is Rs.44000/-, which includes Tuition Fee (Rs.20000/-); Establishment Fee (8000); Student Amenities Fee (4000); Medical Charges (2000); Hostel and Dining Charges (14400).
Financial Assistance: Performance based financial assistance is given to all undergraduate and Dual Degree students. It is mandatory for the students to avail this financial assistance. Students and their parent are required to sign a surety bond for the same at the time of joining IIST. The financial assistance scheme per semester will be Rs.48400/- for General / EWS/ OBC-NCL students who score Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) of 7.5 and above on a scale of 10. SC/ ST/ PD students need to score SGPA of 6.5 and above. SC/ ST/ PD students who secure SGPA between 5.5 and 6.5 will get a financial assistance of Rs.20000/- to cover only Tuition Fee.
Absorption in ISRO/DOS: Based on notified vacancies in different specializations, by ISRO, undergraduate and Dual Degree students will be absorbed as Scientist/ Engineer-SC, subject to fulfilment of conditions applicable to all categories of students (i) Students should successfully complete the B.Tech and Dual Degree Programmes in 4/5 years, respectively (ii) Students should secure minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 7.5 (on a scale of 10) at the end of B.Tech and Dual Degree Programmes (iii) Students are required to be fully medically fit as per ISRO norms. ISRO/ DoS do not guarantee job to all eligible students. Absorption will be in the order of merit based only on vacancies notified by ISRO/ DoS for IIST absorption for that particular year.
Students who are offered a job in ISRO/DoS are mandated to serve as Scientist/Engineer-‘SC’ in the allotted ISRO/DoS centres for a minimum period of 3 years. A student not accepting the ISRO/DoS job offer is liable to pay Rs.10 Lakhs and any accrued interest till the date of payment. Details are given in the Brochure
