Admissions at Chennai Mathematical Institute: Apply by April 13
Chennai Mathematical Institute, H1, SIPCOT IT Park, Siruseri, Kelambakkam, Tamilnadu-603 103, has invited applications for admission to the various Undergraduate and Postgraduate Programmes for 2019-20.
The Programmes offered include 3-Year B.Sc. (Honours) Programme in (i) Mathematics and Computer Science and (ii) Mathematics and Physics; 2-Year M.Sc. Programme in (i) Mathematics (ii) Computer Science and (iii) Data Science; PhD Programme in (i) Mathematics (ii) Computer Science and (iii) Physics.
Eligibility: For admission to the B.Sc. (Honours) Programmes (Mathematics and Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics), applicant should have passed the 12th standard (or equivalent) examination from a recognized board.
The tuition fee is Rs 1,00,000/- per semester (two semesters in a year). Partial and total tuition fee waivers are available, based on the financial background of the student. Forty scholarships will be available, consisting of a full waiver of the tuition fees. In addition, a limited number of fellowships will be available, with a monthly allowance of Rs. 5,000/-.
M.Sc. Mathematics: Applicant should have an Undergraduate degrees such as B.A., B.Sc., B.Math.; B.Stat., B.E., B.Tech., with a strong background in Mathematics.
M.Sc. Computer Science: Applicant should have an undergraduate degrees such as B.A., B.Sc., B.Math.,B.Stat., B.E., B.Tech. with a strong background in Computer Science.
The tuition fee for MSc Mathematics/ Computer Science is Rs 1,00,000/- per semester (two semesters in a year). A substantial number of scholarships will be available, consisting of a full waiver of the tuition fees. The number of scholarships will be roughly equal to the number of students admitted in recent batches of MSc Mathematics/M.Sc Computer Science. In addition, a limited number of fellowships will be available, with a monthly allowance of Rs. 6,000/-.
The eligibility of a student to receive scholarships and fellowships will be reviewed every semester and will depend on satisfactory academic performance.
M.Sc. Data Science: Applicant should have an undergraduate degrees such as B.A., B.Sc., B.Math., B.Stat., B.E., B.Tech., with a background in Mathematics, Statistics or Computer Science.
The tuition fee for M.Sc Data Science is Rs 2,00,000/- per semester (two semesters in a year). Hostel accommodation is not guaranteed for this programme, but will be provided subject to availability. Partial and total tuition fee waivers will also be available, based on the financial background of the student.
Ph.D. in Mathematics: Applicant should have M.Sc. degree in Mathematics or equivalent. Those with a Bachelors degree in Engineering or Science with a strong aptitude for research are also eligible.
Ph.D. in Computer Science: Applicant should have a B.E., B.Tech., M.Sc.,or M.C.A. degree. Those with a Bachelors degree in Science with a strong aptitude for research are also eligible.
Ph.D. in Physics: Applicant should have M.Sc. degree in Physics or equivalent.
Those admitted to the Ph.D. programme are expected to complete 1 to 2 years of compulsory course work. There is also a qualifying examination, to be taken within the first two years. Continuation in the programme is contingent on performance in the Ph.D. courses and the qualifying examination. After passing the qualifying examination, students are assigned guides and begin their research work. Their progress is monitored periodically by a doctoral committee.
Research Scholars get a stipend of Rs 25000/- per month for the first two years and Rs.28000/- per month for the next three years, along with an annual book grant of Rs.10000/-. Scholars who do not stay in the hostel are eligible for a House Rent Allowance of 30% of stipend per month.
At the discretion of the Admissions Committee, students with a B.Sc. Degree and those switching subjects may be admitted as Pre-Ph.D. students. For the first two years, Pre-Ph.D. students will be enrolled as regular M.Sc. students in the corresponding subject. Till they complete their M.Sc. coursework or pass the Ph.D. qualifying examination, Pre-Ph.D. students will receive a reduced scholarship, but will be eligible for other benefits similar to regular Ph.D. students.
Entrance Test: For all programmes other than Ph.D Physics, applicants will have to appear for an entrance examination to be held on 15th May 2019 at Ahmedabad, Allahabad, Bangalore, Bhubaneswar, Calicut, Chandigarh, Chennai, Coimbatore, Delhi, Goa, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Imphal, Indore, Kanpur, Kolkata, Madurai, Mumbai, Nagpur, Patna, Pune, Ranchi, Shillong, Silchar, Srinagar and Trivandrum.
For Ph.D. Physics, applicant should have written the Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST). There is no separate CMI entrance examination for Ph.D. Physics. Candidates within the top 300 ranks in JEST-2019 qualify for interview through this category.
The entrance examination for BSc (common exam for BSc (Hons) Mathematics and Computer Science, and BSc (Hons) Mathematics and Physics) will be held in the morning session from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm and that for admission to MSc/PhD Mathematics, MSc/ PhD Computer Science and MSc Data Science will be held in the Afternoon session, from 2 pm to 5 pm.
Exemption from Entrance Test: For Undergraduate Programmes, those with exceptionally good performance in National Science Olympiads may be exempted from writing the entrance examination at the discretion of the Admissions Committee.
For PhD Mathematics, those awarded the NBHM PhD Fellowship, can qualify for the interview without writing the CMI entrance examination.
For PhD Computer Science one can qualify for the interview without writing the CMI entrance examination, on the basis of their performance in the Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST-2019) in Theoretical Computer Science,
Selection for all Ph.D. programmes will involve an interview at Chennai for shortlisted candidates. For all other programmes, interviews will be at the discretion of the Admissions Committee. The Committee may call shortlisted candidates for an interview depending on their prior academic record.
The entrance examination is common for both Undergraduate Programmes and will be a test of aptitude for Mathematics at the 12th standard level, featuring both objective questions and problems drawn mostly from Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry and Calculus. Applicant need not select the course at the time of applying. The choice can be made after admission.
For MSc/PhD Computer Science, the entrance examination is a test of aptitude for Computer Science featuring both multiple choice questions and problems requiring detailed solutions drawn mostly from Discrete Mathematics, Algorithms, Basic Computer Organization and some Programming.
For MSc/PhD Mathematics, the entrance examination will be a test of aptitude for Mathematics featuring both multiple choice questions and problems requiring detailed solutions drawn mostly from Algebra, Real Analysis, Complex Analysis and Calculus.
For MSc Data Science, the entrance examination will be a test of aptitude in Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science. The questions will test familiarity with school level Mathematics, Discrete Mathematics, Probability theory, Logic, and Programming.
Application: Submission of application online is the preferred mode of applying. Applications can be submitted online at the link given at https://www.cmi.ac.in/admissions, latest by 23:59 (IST) on 13 April, 2019 (Saturday). For MSc/PhD, one can apply for multiple programmes.
Application fees: For those applying online, application fees may be paid online. Online applicants may also pay application fees by DD, in favour of Chennai Mathematical Institute, drawn on any bank, payable at Chennai.
For online BSc applications, the application fee is Rs 750/-.If payment is made by DD, the same has to be sent along with a printed Payment Advice generated through the application form. Instructions are available at the website.
For online MSc/PhD applications, there are four categories of subjects (i) Category 1: MSc and/or PhD Mathematics (ii) Category 2: MSc and/or PhD Computer Science (iii) Category 3: MSc Data Science (iv) Category 4: PhD Physics. If one applies in a single category, the application fee is Rs 750/-. If applying in more than one category, the fee is Rs 900/-. The exact fee payable will be displayed when application form is filled up.
Printed Form: Those requesting a printed application form, has to remit an amount pf Rs.900/- by way of a DD for all categories of applications, including applications for multiple MSc/PhD programmes. The DD should be sent along with the request for a form.Printed Application Forms and information brochure can be obtained by post by sending a DD for Rs. 900/- in favour of Chennai Mathematical Institute, drawn on any bank, payable at Chennai preferably by Speed Post or courier to ‘Admissions Committee, Attn: Request for Application Form 2019, Chennai Mathematical Institute, H1, SIPCOT IT Park, Siruseri, Kelambakkam, Tamil Nadu-603103. Applicant should indicate his/her name, address and the programme(s) applying for.
For MSc/PhD, one can apply for multiple programmes but need to send only a single DD.
The last date for issue of Paper applications is 12th April, 2019. The last date for receipt of filled paper applications at CMI is 13 April, 2019 (Saturday).
Those applying for admission without appearing for the entrance Examination of CMI should also submit the CMI application form in full detail and pay the application fee. After filling out the form, PhD Mathematics applicants may send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org attaching a scanned copy of the NBHM scorecard along with BSc and MSc academic transcripts. For Computer Science, applicant should send an email to email@example.com to inform CMI that applicant has written JEST. Applicants for PhD Physics, after filling the form, should send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org attaching a scanned copy of JEST scorecard. If one qualifies directly for the interview based on performance in specified exams, applicant will receive a notification from the Admissions Committee. If applicant does not hear from CMI, applicant must write the CMI entrance examination (except for Physics) in order to qualify.
DD details can be uploaded online by 23.59 hrs on 16th April, 2019. The Last date for DDs to reach CMI is 22 April, 2019 (Monday). Admit Cards will be made available online from 1st May, 2019. Results of the entrance examination will be announced before 18th June, 2019.
