Admission to UG Design Programme at NID
Vijayawada: National Institute of Design (NID), has invited applications for admission to the 4-year Bachelor of Design (B.Des.) Programme at its campus at Ahmedabad and the four years, Graduate Diploma Programme in Design (GDPD) at its campuses at Kurukshetra and Vijayawada. The three Institutes are independent autonomous institutes under the Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP), Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India.
Admission to all these courses will be on the basis of the two-stage Design Aptitude Test (DAT) which will assess the knowledge, skills and behavioural abilities of candidates.
The B.Des programme has 100 seats for Indian nationals with reservations for various categories as per the Government of India guidelines. There are 15 seats for Foreign Nationals under overseas (supernumerary) category. It is offered in the following areas of specialization:
Faculty of Industrial Design: Ceramic & Glass Design (10 seats); Furniture & Interior Design (10); Product Design (15)
Faculty of Communication Design: Animation Film Design (15); Exhibition Design (10); Film & Video Communication (10 seats); Graphic Design (15)
Faculty of Textile, Apparel, Lifestyle and Accessory Design: Textile Design (15)
All those admitted to this Programme will be required to attend a mandatory foundation programme of one-year duration. Allotment of a discipline of choice is based on a candidate’s merit and choice only after successful completion of the foundation programme.
The Graduate Diploma Program in Design (GDPD) at Kurukshetra and Vijayawada, each having 60 seats, only for Indian nationals has a two semester Foundation Program followed by 6 semesters of specialized studies in one of Industrial Design, Communication Design & Textile and Apparel Design, .
Eligibility for B.Des & GDPD: For Indian Nationals, the upper age limit as on 30th June, 2018, will be 20 years for General Category (those born on or after 1st July, 1998), 23 years for OBC-NCL, SC, ST categories (born on or after 1st July, 1995) and 25 years for PwD (born on or after 1st July, 1993). For Foreign Nationals in Overseas (Supernumerary) Category for B.Des, upper age limit will be 20 years as on 30th June, 2018.
Applicant should have passed Higher Secondary (10+2) or equivalent qualifying examination in any stream (Science, Arts, Commerce, etc.) from any recognized Board of education such as CBSE, IB, ICSE or should be appearing for the qualifying examination in the academic year 2017-18.
Examinations considered equivalent to these are as follows:
- Final examination of the 10+2 system under a Central or State Board recognized by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU, Referwww.aiuweb.org)
- Intermediate or two-year Pre-university examination under a Board or University recognized by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU, Referwww.aiuweb.org)
- Final examination of the two-year course of the Joint Services Wing of the National Defense Academy
- Senior secondary school examination under the National Institute of Open Schooling, with a minimum of five subjects
- Any public school, board or university examination completed in India or in any foreign country recognized as equivalent to the 10+2 system by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU, Referwww.aiuweb.org)
- H.S.C. vocational examination
- General Certificate Education (GCE) examination at the Advanced (A) level taken in London, Cambridge or Sri Lanka
- High School Certificate Examination from Cambridge University or an International Baccalaureate diploma from the International Baccalaureate Office, Geneva
- AICTE approved three-year Full time Diploma after Class X offered by Board of Technical Education of any state in India or Union Territories as mentioned on http://www.aicte-india.org/statisticbote.php
Those who have completed final examinations for class XII/equivalent outside India or from a Board not specified above should produce a certificate from the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) confirming that the examination they have passed is equivalent to the Class XII examination conducted in India.
Those appearing for qualifying examination will be required to produce proof of having appeared for the examination by the time of online document verification. If the results of their Class XII have not been declared by the concerned board or university by the date of physical document verification by NID, admission will be strictly provisional, subject to providing by that date (of declaration of admission results by NID) the qualifying exam’s date sheet/admit card/Principal’s certificate as proof of having appeared for their final qualifying exam and submitting of the final result of their board exams (including compartment or supplementary examinations) or a certificate proving their eligibility, to the Activity Chairperson, Professional Education Programme, before 31st August, 2018.
Design Aptitude Tests (DAT): Selection to the Programmes will be based on Design Aptitude Tests (DAT), common to applicants to all three institutes. It will be conducted in two stages. Stage 1 will be the DAT Prelims and Stage 2, DAT Mains. DAT (Prelims) will be a pen-and-paper test, carrying a maximum of 100 points. It will evaluate the candidate on Knowledge, Comprehension, Analysis, Visualization and Creativity, and will be conducted from 1000 hrs to 1300 hrs on 7th January, 2018 (Sunday), at Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Dehradun, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kolkata, Kurukshetra, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna, Panjim, Raipur, Ranchi, Thiruvananthapuram and Vijayawada.
DAT will have two parts: Part I, carrying 70 points, will have multiple-choice questions with one or more correct answers, The responses of this part is to be recorded on an OMR sheet and will be evaluated digitally. Part II, carrying 30 points will have subjective questions, with responses to be provided in visual and/or written formats. The question paper will be in English. All questions are compulsory. There is no negative marking.
Based on DAT Prelims scores, separate merit lists will be prepared for Open, OBC-NCL, SC, ST & PwD and for overseas candidates. Only shortlisted candidates will be eligible to appear for the DAT Mains exam to be held at Ahmedabad from 15th May, 2018 (Tuesday) to 22nd May, 2018 (Tuesday). The DAT Mains, of three hours duration, carrying 100 marks, may consist of tests in different formats such as drawing/sketching, hands-on model making. DAT Mains will be conducted in English.
A Weightages of 30% will be given for the score of DAT Prelims & 70% for the score of DAT Mains for final result. The final common merit lists for the B.Des and GDPD Programmes will be generated category wise, based on the sum total of the weighted scores obtained by the candidate. Separate merit list will be prepared for overseas candidates for B.Des Programme.
Application: Application has to be submitted online at http://admissions.nid.edu/ latest by 1400 hrs on 31st October, 2017 (Tuesday). Application submission has to be completed in three steps-Signing up/Registration, Filling up the Online Application Form and finally, uploading Documents & signature as per the specifications.
Application Fee: Applications fee will be Rs.2000/- for General and OBC-NCL applicants and Rs.1000/- for SC/ST/PwD categories. For B.Des, for overseas applicants, the fee is Rs.3000/-. The Application fees can be paid online by Debit/Credit card or by DD.
For those paying fee by DD, the Demand draft should be taken in favour of ‘All India Management Association’ payable at New Delhi. The details of the DD should be filled in the online application form to complete the submission process. Application Form may be saved as a PDF File and may be printed, latest by 1400 hrs on 31st October 2017 (Tuesday). Demand Draft and a printout of the application form has to be sent in a single envelope by Speed Post/Courier/Registered post, to reach ‘The Project Manager-CMS All India Management Association, Management House, 14, Institutional Area, Lodhi Road, New Delhi 110 003’, before 1600 hrs on 9th November, 2017 (Thursday), to complete the application process. Those who make online payment via Debit/Credit card are not required to send the print-out of the application form.
Applications can also be submitted after 1400 hrs on 31st October 2017 (Tuesday), till 1400 hrs on 9th November 2017 (Thursday) with a fee, which will be double the normal amount, to be paid online only, by Debit/Credit card.
Applicants can review and correct the information in the application form except those related to eligibility criteria, date of birth, category, email id, citizenship and the discipline applied, from 1200 hrs on 14th November, 2017 to 1200 hrs on 16th November, 2017.
Admit Cards for DAT Prelim can be downloaded from www.admissions.nid.edu from 1600 hrs on 20th December 2017 (Wednesday).
Answer Keys of DAT Prelims Part I will be available at the admission website from 1100 hrs on 12th January 2018 (Friday). The Window to challenge answer keys will be available Online only, from 1100 hrs on 18th January, 2018 (Thursday), till 1600 hrs on, 19 January 2018 (Friday). Challenge has to made by paying a fee of Rs.1000/- per question challenged. Final answer keys will be uploaded on 30th January, 2018 (Tuesday).
DAT Prelims result will be announced by 1600 hrs on 13th March 2018 (Tuesday). Final Merit List will be published at 1400 hrs on 31st May 2018 (Thursday).
Allotment of seat for B.Des/GDPD programme will be conducted in person at Ahmedabad.
Those from reserved categories will be offered admission according to their rank in the first merit list. The score of the candidate securing the last seat in the open category will be considered as the cut-off score for the reserved category. Considering this as the standard of measure, cut-off scores will be relaxed for candidates from reserved categories. Compared to the cut-off score of the Open category, it will be less by 10% for OBC (NCL) and by 20% for SC/ST and by 30% for PwD.
