Thiruvananthapuram: Following the cabinet nod for implementation of 10 per cent reservation in government jobs for the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) in the general category without affecting the existing ones, a notification has been issued amending the Kerala State and Subordinate Services Rules in this regard. The notification, allowing for 10 percent reservation for financially backward candidates in general category in employment through Public Service Commission and admissions in educational institutions, was dated October 23, 2020 meaning the reservation is in force from the said day.
However, the date from which the reservation will be applicable in PSC appointments is not clear. At present, no PSC rank list has issued separate list for the financially backward section in general category. It is believed that this will be applicable for the appointment procedures that will be notified in future.
The notification also said that the vacancies reserved for EWS section will not be withheld if there is no deserving candidate. These vacancies will be converted to general category. At present, in case of caste reservation, if there is no eligible candidate, these vacancies are withheld and a separate notification is issued. This system will not be followed in case of EWS reservation.
