The central government has developed a website to help students get their education loans just within a click. It also helps the students to know about various scholarships they can avail.
Vidya Lakshmi (www.vidyalakshmi.co.in), is an IT based mechanism under the Pradhan Mantri Vidya Lakshmi Karyakram to provide the students a single window electronic platform for Scholarships and Educational Loans.
This portal has been developed under the guidance of Department of Financial Services, (Ministry of Finance), Department of Higher Education (Ministry of Human Resource Development) and Indian Banks Association (IBA). The portal has been developed and being maintained by NSDL e-Governance Infrastructure Limited.
Students can view, apply and track the education loan applications to banks anytime, anywhere by accessing the portal. The portal also provides linkages to National Scholarship Portal.
Those students who are to apply for education loans have to mandatorily register at Vidya Lakshmi. All the details including interest rates, security details and other information regarding education loans provided by all banks are available on the portal.
Students can select what is best for them according to their eligibility and fill up the Common Education Loan Application Form (CELAF). This application form, approved by the Indian Banks Association, will be accepted by all banks. Through this portal, a student can submit application to maximum of three banks.
The provision to upload necessary documents, facility to track and know the status of the applications and many other options are available at the web portal.
Students can avail loans for courses in both India and abroad.
Details regarding various scholarships provided by both central government and state government are available in the site.
Students have to register at Vidya Lakshmi home page using their name, mobile number and email id. A website link will be sent to their mail. Clicking on the link, students will be taken to a page where details of all available scholarships are shown. If their eligibility matches, application can be submitted online. Those scholarship amounts will be considered as students’ margin amount by various banks while sanctioning the education loans.
