Admissions at Chennai Mathematical Institute: Apply by April 11


Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI), Chennai, has invited applications for admission to various Programmes offered by it for 2020-21

The Programmes and Eligibility for Admission are as follows:

For admission to the 3-Year B.Sc. (Honours) Programme in (i) Mathematics and Computer Science and (ii) Mathematics and Physics, applicant should have passed 12th standard/equivalent examination from a recognized board.

M.Sc. in Mathematics: Applicant should have a B.A., B.Sc, B.Math, B.Stat, B.E or B.Tech with a strong background in Mathematics.

M.Sc. in Computer Science: B.A., B.Sc., B.Math. B.Stat., B.E., B.Tech with a strong background in Computer science

M.Sc. in Data Science: B.A., B.Sc., B.Math. B.Stat., B.E., B.Tech with a strong background in Mathematics/Statistics/Computer Science.

Ph.D. in Mathematics: Students with M.Sc. degree in Mathematics or equivalent and students with a bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Science with a strong aptitude for research.

Ph.D. in Computer Science: Students with a B.E., B.Tech., M.Sc or M.C.A. degree and students with a bachelor’s degree in Science with a strong aptitude for research.

Ph.D. in Physics: Students with a M.Sc. degree in Physics or equivalent.

Selection: For all programmes other than Ph.D. in Physics, selection will be based on an entrance examination to be held on 15th May 2020 at Ahmedabad, Allahabad, Bangalore, Bhubaneswar, Calicut, Chandigarh, Chennai, Coimbatore, Delhi, Goa, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Imphal, Indore, Kanpur, Kolkata, Madurai, Mumbai, Nagpur, Patna, Pune, Ranchi, Shillong, Silchar, Srinagar and Trivandrum.

There is a common entrance examination for both the B.Sc. (Hons.) programmes which will be held from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm. Applicant need not select the course at the time of applying. The choice can be made after admission. Those with exceptionally good performance in National Science Olympiads may be exempted from writing the Bachelors entrance examination at the discretion of the Admissions Committee.

The Entrance Examinations for MSc/PhD Mathematics; MSc/PhD Computer Science; MSc Data Science will be held between 2 pm and 5 pm.

There is no separate CMI entrance examination for Ph.D. Physics. The selection will be based on Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST).

Application: Application can be submitted online at https://apply2020.cmi.ac.in/#online and application fee paid online latest by 23.59 hrs on 11 April, 2020 (Saturday). Information Brochure can be downloaded from https://www.cmi.ac.in/admissions

Application fees can be paid by way of DD also. DD may be taken in favour of Chennai Mathematical Institute, drawn on any bank, payable at Chennai. The DD has to be sent along with a printed Payment Advice generated through the application form.

For online BSc applications, the application fee is Rs 750/- to be paid online or by way of DD. For online MSc/PhD applications, application fee will be Rs.750/- or Rs.900/- depending on the Programmes applied, the details of which are available in the online application page.

DD details can be updated online by 23.59 hrs on 15th April, 2020 (Wednesday). DDs should reach CMI by 20th April, 2020 (Monday).

Application can also be submitted offline by requesting a printed application form, either by post or in person, latest by 10th April, 2020. For printed application forma, the fee can be paid only by way of DD. For all Programmes/Combination of Programmes, printed application forms and information brochures can be obtained by sending a DD for Rs. 900/- in favour of Chennai Mathematical Institute, drawn on any bank, payable at Chennai has to be send preferably by Speed Post or courier to ‘Admissions Committee; Attn: Request for Application Form 2020, Chennai Mathematical Institute, H1, SIPCOT IT Park, Siruseri, Kelambakkam, Tamil Nadu- 603103’ Indicating name, address and the programme(s) applying for.

Offline paper applications are to reach CMI by 11th April, 2020 (Saturday).

Admit Cards will be available online from 1st May, 2020 (Friday).

Results of the Entrance Examination will be announced by 19th June, 2020 (Friday).

Details of Fees and scholarships are given in the Information Brochure. The tuition fee for the B.Sc Programmes is Rs 1,00,000/- per semester. Thirty five scholarships will be available, consisting of a full waiver of the tuition fees. In addition, a limited number of fellowships will be available, with a monthly allowance of Rs. 5,000/-. The eligibility of a student to receive scholarships and fellowships will be reviewed every semester and will depend on satisfactory academic performance.

Those applying to the PhD in Mathematics can qualify for the interview without writing the CMI entrance examination if they are been awarded the NBHM PhD Fellowship. Those applying to the PhD programme in Computer Science can qualify for the interview on the basis of their performance in the Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST-2020) in Theoretical Computer Science, without writing the CMI entrance examination.

Those applying to the PhD programme in Physics will qualify for the interview on the basis of their performance in the Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST-2020) in Physics. There is no separate CMI entrance examination for PhD Physics. Those within the top 300 ranks in JEST-2020 qualify for interview through this category.
