There has been rampant poaching of elephants in Western Ghat areas between 2013 and 2018 that shall be investigated by a special team headed by CBI, the Madras HC ordered. The other members of the team shall be from state police and forest department and by May 15 a status report has to be submitted.
The court was constrained to issue an order since some shocking cases of elephant poaching were reported. Not only poaching but other forest crimes were also on the increase and the culprits have not been brought to light. There have been organised crimes in the Western Ghat areas and forest wealth were plundered. This invited the serious attention of the court.
Poachers are more concerned with the tusks and there is a network of mafias operating in the area. The court hopes that meaningful investigation will be done.
