Even at 100, this granny wants to continue fabric painting and sewing
For the past 19 years, Padmam Nair has been spending her free hours for fabric painting on sarees. Now she is 100 years old, but age is only a number for her when it comes to the hobby. "It's too boring to sit idle. My hands will start getting numb if I do not do anything. So, I engage in painting and sewing..." Padmam Nar said actively.
When people think of retirement at the age of 60 and 70, Padmam went back to her hobby at 80. Also she has no plans to give away her works for free. "I paint every saree taking so much effort. So, I sell them for a good price. It takes about one month to complete a saree. I do painting from morning to noon. After having lunch and taking some rest, I start sewing in the afternoon," the granny said.
"My children and their spouses help me a lot. My daughter shops sarees for me. A daughter-in-law is a doctor in Manipal and she also brings me sarees. I used to make designs and then paint them earlier. Now I can't do all that. One of my daughters works as a senior designer in Abu Dhabi. She sends me good designs and I copy it on the sarees for painting. There are plenty of customers. Some sarees can fetch upto Rs 10,000," she added.
Her daughter Latha also supported, "Mother is leading a scheduled life and does all of her daily chores by herself. She also reads newspapers and magazines. As she rarely sits idle, no health problems annoy her. She uses eye drops regularly and needs a walker to move around." She carries a basket on the walker which contains everything she needs like a water bottle, nail clippers, scissors, tape and a mobile phone.
"I loved drawing and colouring since a very early age. My uncle sent me to drawing class after 10th and I studied there for a while. Then I dropped everything after marriage. After my children grew up and I became free once again, I went back to my hobbies," Padmam said.
She also paints shawls, table cloths, salwar, pillow cover and other clothes. When the artwork with attractive designs is complete, the centenarian also beams with delight.
