Vayalar award row: MK Sanu criticises award selection
Kochi: Writer-orator Prof. M. K. Sanu has responded on the controversy over Vayalar Rama Varma Literary Award and his resignation from the award selection committee. M. K. Sanu told ‘Mathrubhumi’ that he was pressurized to give the award to a literary work that scored the lowest in the evaluation.
‘Nireeswaran’ written by V. J. James scored the highest in the last phase of evaluation. But there was intense pressure to select a controversial book, Sanu disclosed.
“I already know that the autobiography of a person who is a noted Malayalam poet, literary researcher, teacher and close ally of Left front will be given Vayalar award this time. I was informed that a high official in the university who is also a relative of the person intervened in award selection,” he stated.
M. K. Sanu went on saying that he decided to resign as he could not support the worthless activities and that the awards have lost transparency and integrity.
“My only intention is that a book that has no standards and contains not even a drop of creativity should not be bestowed with the award. I am stepping down with complete satisfaction for being able to raise my voice against the external pressures,” he clarified.
"I have only mentioned health issues as the reason for my resignation. I have not stated anything in the letter that would disgrace the trust or its members," Sanu said. The trust secretary had alleged that revealing the names of books considered for the award was a mean action but I had revealed the names only after resigning from the post.
Believe that award will be reconsidered
M. K. Sanu further said that the award will be announced even in his absence. There are two more persons in the jury and they will announce the award on Saturday. He believes that the decision to give the award to an undeserving book will be reconsidered in the backdrop of controversies.
Earlier, Vayalar Rama Varma Trust secretary C. V. Thrivikraman responded that M. K. Sanu was firm on his decision to resign in the last moment of award declaration despite their pleas. Sanu also returned the flight tickets given to him for reaching Thiruvananthapuram for award declaration, trust secretary clarified.
The trust committee will be convened on Saturday morning and new chairman will be selected. After this, a judging committee meeting will be convened under the new chairman’s leadership and the award selection will be conducted.
