U A Khader bags Mathrubhumi Literary Award 2019
Kozhikode: Renowned short story writer and novelist U A Khader has been selected for this year’s Mathrubhumi Literary Award. The award includes a purse of Rs 3 lakh, a sculpture and a felicitation letter. The jury committee comprising of noted poet KGS as head and novelist Sara Joseph and critic Asha Menon as members selected U A Khader for the award.
U A Khader was born to Keralite Moideenkutty Hajji and Myanmar native Mamaidi in 1935 at Bilin in Myanmar. He reached Kerala during the World War II. After completing studies from Koyilandi Government High School, he learned art from Madras College of Arts. He worked in Akashavani Kozhikode station, Medical College Institute of Maternal and Child Health and Government General Hospital and retired from government service in 1990.
Khader is the author of over 70 books in various genres including novels, stories, articles, travelogues and children’s literature. Among them, ‘Thrikkottoor Peruma’ is one of the most noted work penned by him. His major works include Thrikkottoor Kathakal, Krishnamaniyile Theenalam, Aghorasivam, Vaye Pathalam, Kalasham and Khuraishikkottam.
In 1983, Khader won Kerala Sahitya Akademi award for ‘Thrikkottoor Peruma’ and in 2009, Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award for ‘Thrikkottoor Novelukal’. He has also bagged various honours including SK Pottekkatt Award, Padmaprabha Award and Abu Dhabi Shakti Award.
Mathrubhumi Literary Award will be presented to U A Khader by writer T Padmanabhan at a function to be held at K P Kesava Menon Hall in Kozhikode on December 30, Monday.
