Thiruvananthapuram: Poet Sugathakumari has been presented with the Kadammanitta Ramakrishnan Award instituted by Kadammanita Ramakrishnan Foundation. The award comprising of a purse of Rs 55,555 was handed over to the poet by the foundation’s president M A Baby.
M A Baby opined that Sugathakumari is a divine amalgam of poetry, language and culture. Just as ONV Kurup penned, Sugathakumari is a tree of blossom that gives fragrance to the woods and the humans, and shade to those who suffer. The artistes have the right to criticize anyone in a humanitarian perspective, he said.
Movie director Adoor Gopalakrishnan delivered a speech commemorating late poet Kadammanitta Ramakrishnan. He opined that both Kadammanitta and Sugathakumari have reached boundless heights in writing.
Poet Madhusoodanan Nair stated that Kadammanitta is a precious verse of Malayalam whereas Sugathakumari is a wholehearted prayer. Sugathakumari said after receiving the award that she led an aimless life full of struggles and hardships. She added that there is no need of an award to remember Kadammanitta.
Filmmaker Shaji N Karun, Kadammanitta’s wife Santha Ramakrishnan, son Geetha Krishnan, poet ONV’s wife Sarojini Amma, Dr. B Iqbal and others also attended the ceremony.
