Moortidevi award for M P Veerendra Kumar
New Delhi: Rajya Sabha MP and writer M P Veerendra Kumar has been selected for the prestigious Moortidevi Award of Bharatiya Jnanpith organization.
The Moortidevi Award, constituted by the Bhartiya Jnanpith, is presented annually for a "contemplative and perceptive work which expresses, underlines and illumines human values rooted in the broad vision of Indian philosophy and cultural heritage".
The award has been given for Veerendra Kumar’s work Haimavatha Bhoovil.
The award carries an amount of Rs 4 lakh, a statue of Saraswati and a plaque.
Haimavathabhoovil had bagged the Vayalar Award and Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award in 2008 and 2010 respectively.
Mahakavi Akkitham and short story writer C Radhakrishnan are the other Keralites who received the Moortidevi award before.
Veerendra Kumar, who is the Managing Director of Mathrubhumi, has bagged around 80 awards including Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award, Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award, Vayalar Award, Odakkuzhal Award, Nalappadan Award, Mahakavi G Award, Balamani Amma Award, Dr Shivram Karanth Award, KV Surendranath Award and Swadeshabhimani Award.
Samanwayathinte Vasantham, Buddhante Chiri, Gattum Kanacharadukalum, Atmavilekkoru Theerthayathra, Prathibhayute Verukal Thedi, Changampuzha: Vidhiyute Vettamrigam, Thirinjhunokkumbol, Lokavyapara Samkhadanayum Oorakkudukkukalum (Gattinu Seshamulla Oranweshanam), Roshathinte Vithukal, Adhinivesathinte Adiyozhukukal, Smrithi Chithrangal, MP Veerendrakumarinte krithikal, Venam Nithantha Jagratha, Danube Sakshi and Vichinthinangal Smaranakal are some of his other works.

Reacting to the news, MP Veerendra Kumar said that he is happy to be honoured with the Award. “It was unexpected,” he said.
