Kudumbashree initiates women's library to promote reading
Kodungallur (Thrissur): The concept of 'One Ayalkoottam five books' initiated by Eriyad panchayat and Kudumbashree units ended up forming a library here. As the idea went viral, quite a number of novels, articles, travelogues, autobiographies, plays, poems and other books brought from the Kudumbashree units in Eriyad panchayat started piling up in the Kudumbashree office.
Thus a library was formed close to the Kudumbashree office near Eriyad community hall at a cost of Rs 6 lakh. This is the first Kudumbashree women's library in the district. A total of 7500 members from 540 Ayalkoottam units in the panchayat are part of the library.
Considering the COVID crisis, the library is delivering books for the quarantined people in households too. They have filed application for affiliation in library council. Once it is approved, more books and facilities will be available from the panchayat and the council.
Every Ayalkoottam are directed to contribute five books at the time of registration compulsorily. Thus the book collection in the library is maintained and improved. Though separate staff is not appointed for the library, the CDS chairperson is in charge of its operations.
