Former prison warden treasures letter written by poet Sugathakumari for 35 yrs
Irikkur (Kannur): A letter written by late poet Sugathakumari has been treasured by its recipient for 35 years. Oorathur native K Narayanan received the letter from the poet years ago.
Sugathakumari had visited Vayalar Award distribution ceremony held in Kannur in October 1985. She then stayed at Western India Plywoods Guest House. Narayanan visited her and introduced himself.
An article was published in Mathrubhumi weekly by the end of 1985 about a woman named Mary who works as a Cabaret dancer despite being a postgraduate. This had sparked a controversy then and the poet had written in Mathrubhumi in response to the report that she can give another job for Mary.
Following this, Narayanan sent a letter to Sugathakumari inquiring if she had given Mary the job she offered. The poet gave him a reply through a letter which he treasured till date. Narayanan was working as warden in Kannur Central Prison then.
Sugathakumari stated in the letter that she responded to Mary only through Mathrubhumi and no response was received from Mary after that. She also said that she was waiting for a reply from the woman regarding the matter.
