Colleagues unaware of writer who penned 15 novels, 40 stories, 2 dramas
Thoppumpadi: Shalan is popular among Kochi people as a union leader. But even his colleagues are unaware of his story writing. He started writing from childhood. His stories were published in leading children’s publications. Later, he switched to novel writing and penned 15 novels. Among them, 11 were published in various periodicals and later published as books.
A maths graduate, Shalan had worked as a tuition teacher for many years. Then he joined as lascar in Kochi port and gradually appointed in different posts like clerk and tally supervisor. At present, he is assistant wharf superintendent. As he works in a technical field, Shalan has to work in night shifts some times. So, he spends day hours for writing.
Shalan had already published 40 stories in various publications. Two dramas were published as books. Also he wrote a children’s fiction and a script for a serial. His five novels were published by a cooperative society of literary enthusiasts. However, he never writes at workplace. Shalan said that he never talks about writing to his colleagues.
Shalan is also an office-bearer of Port Staff Association. After work, he engages in union activities. Then he comes back home and starts writing. This is his habit for the last 35 years. Now he is planning to publish a book compiling 28 stories. Shalan hails from Chilavannoor in Ernakulam.
