Book fair at Viyyur jail: Prisoners buy books worth Rs 1 lakh in 4 hours
Thrissur: A book fair conducted in the Viyyur Central Prison on Gandhi Jayanti day turned into a historic event as the prisoners bought books worth more than Rs 1 lakh. The event was inaugurated by Kerala Sahitya Akademi president Vaisakhan. Writers Ashokan Cheruvil, Ravunni and others also attended the programme to interact with the prisoners.
The book fair was conducted in the prison for the first time. The inmates had prepared Biennale-like installations at the venue of book fair that was held between 10 am to 2 pm. Within four hours, the prisoners purchased books worth Rs 1.10 lakh.
Though there are strict restrictions to spend money in the jail, the authorities relaxed the rules for buying books. 32 jail inmates bought books for more than Rs 1000. A prisoner named Sajith bought books for Rs 7451.
Many people from outside also visited the book fair and they contributed books to the prison library before returning. The prison authorities welcomed the writers gifting them seed filled pens. Along with the book fair, an exhibition sale of the handicrafts made by the prisoners also was conducted.
