Controversy on China travelogue: Chintha Jerome’s reply to trolls
Kerala State Youth commission chairperson Chintha Jerome’s second book ‘Chankile China’ (China in my heart) was released by chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan the other day. The book is about her journey to China and she had shared the joy of releasing the book through Facebook. However, soon after the release, the Facebook trolls started attacking Chintha ridiculing her book and its cover. She is sharing her views on the controversy to Mathrubhumi.com.
What is ‘Chankile China’ about?
‘Chankile China’ is purely a travelogue. What I saw in China and my experiences there etc. are included in the book. My house is at Chinnakkada, which was earlier known as Cheenakkada. It is a place that had business connection with China. Even the tagline of the book is ‘China journey of a Chinnakkada native’.
I visited China two years ago. A 15-member team led by former MP K. N. Balagopal from Kollam visited the country. I was the youngest one among them. When we returned after 10 days journey, I felt that I should write about the things I saw in China. I had given a few articles for some online media. This book is a collection of these articles.
Selfie in cover photo
When the articles were made into a book, the publishers asked pictures taken from China to make it look more attractive as it is a travelogue. Thus I gave the pictures to them. It was they who designed the cover photo.
I am personally happy for having the present picture they used as the cover photo. The girl seen in the cover worked with us as translator for 10 days. You will know whether it was a selfie or photograph and what the content of the book is etc. only when you have the book in your hand. Everything else are mere childish comments.
China as a country
Being a Communist supporter, I uphold universal humanity. But that does not mean that I don’t like my motherland. When I say that I love a person, it does not imply that I don’t love my parents. I need not say every now and then that I love my parents. The love for our motherland is within us all the time. But I have no hatred for any other country too.
To the trolls
Just like I have the freedom to write the book, they have the freedom to create trolls. I accept that. Many of them have not even seen the book. They criticise based only on my Facebook post.
