Choose a ripe avocado. Gently press the avocado. It should feel slightly soft but not mushy. Wash it before cutting
Place the avocado on a cutting board. Using a sharp knife, cut lengthwise around the fruit until you reach the pit, then rotate the avocado to complete the cut
Hold each half firmly and twist in opposite directions to separate them, revealing the pit
Instead of striking the pit with a knife, use a spoon to scoop it out while the avocado rests on the cutting board. This helps avoid "avocado hand" injuries
Peel the skin or make slices or cubes while the flesh is still in the skin. Scoop out the pieces with a spoon and use them for toast, salads, sandwiches or guacamole
