Young entrepreneur shows how plants flourish in soilless potting mix
There are many people who grow ornamental plants inside households. Many of them are likely to face issues of slow growth of plants or frequent damages to them. Sometimes, the reason could be the unsuitable potting mixture. As it is very hard to get soil in cities, the flat dwellers often choose potting mix. Aluva native Anas Nasar has come up with a solution for this problem through customized soilless potting mixture.
From charcoal to potting mix
Anas first started a media-IT enterprise in the start-up village. He also experimented with online sale of charcoal in international market. It was then he came to know that charcoal is used to grow orchid plants. With this, he started selling charcoal to orchid planters.
Then he studied about special potting mix to grow foreign varieties of succulents and cactus. When he developed a potting mix for such plants, he received many positive responses. Following this, he started the venture to prepare potting mix knowing the specialties and demands of each type of plant.
Anas develops potting mix for not only ornamental plants, but also leafy greens and medicinal herbs. He claimed that he developed a special potting mix exclusively for succulent plants for the first time in India.
Soilless potting mix
Anas said that the indoor plants do not need much fertilizers. Compost, cow dung and bone manure can be listed as waste and they contain fungus and bacteria. These are suitable for plants growing in soil, but not necessary for indoor plants and plants in grow bags, in his opinion.
It was very hard to completely avoid soil in the potting mix. Anas tried many items like wood, dry leaves, banana tree parts, sugarcane waste, coconut husk, charcoal etc and treated them. He has manufacturing units to treat coconut husk and for other purposes. He experimented by mixing various ingredients and adding nutrients before developing the potting mix.
Anas has introduced his organic potting mix under the brand 'Organure' through online platforms. He has clients both inside and outside India. He also receives orders through his Instagram page 'Anas Organure'.
Potting mix is sold for rates starting from Rs 45 per kilogram. The potting mix for succulents and cactus costs Rs 120 per kilogram. Anas has also developed soil conditioners as a replacement for the conventional fertilizers.
