Use rain shelter to continue farming even during monsoon
The plants in kitchen garden get damaged easily when rain intensifies. If we set up a rain shelter, vegetables can be easily cultivated without fearing the rainfall. Even if there is no land for farming, we can manage rooftop farming by installing a rain shelter on terrace.
Intense rain, high humidity and low sunlight are not suitable for vegetable cultivation. Rain shelter protects the crops from rainfall and regulates humidity and temperature through its open sides. It should be installed in places where sunlight is available aplenty. If shady trees are near the place, rain shelter is not suitable there.
Rain shelter farming
Rain shelter is normally used for small scale farming and kitchen garden. It is not ideal for large scale cultivation. In this method, a polythene sheet is used as a protective roof over a frame to prevent rain water from falling in. There are different types of rain shelters. The agriculture department provides subsidy for building rain shelters.
A frame and a protective cover are the major parts of a rain shelter and is similar to the green house in nurseries. Bamboo, areca nut tree or iron pipes can be used for making the frame. Transparent UV stabilized polythene sheets with 200 micron thickness should be used as protective cover. Its roof can be shaped like a semi-circle or sloped trellis.
