Tips to make more profit out of rooftop farming
With consistent efforts from agriculture department, many people have started growing vegetables and other essential crops on their rooftops. This is helpful for collecting chemical-free healthy vegetables for household purposes.
In order to get better yield and more profit from rooftop farming, we have to keep in mind certain facts.
The best crops for rooftop farming are chilli, tomato, brinjal, spinach, beans and winter vegetables.
Potting mix can be made by adding topsoil, sand and cow dung powder in 1:1:1 ratio and 25 grams of dolomite or lime.
Fill three fourth of grow bag or flowerpot with the potting mix and then plant saplings.
The saplings prepared in pro-tray can be planted in grow bags in the evening.
Keep them under shade for 3-4 days and then place under sun.
Water the plants only once in a day in the initial days. When more branches emerge, water them every morning and evening.
While watering, give only necessary amount of water and make sure that the entire portion of potting mix becomes wet.
Place a tray under the flowerpots to collect excess water.
Try drip irrigation for better growth and effective irrigation.
Various types of organic manures can be provided once in every five days.
Cow dung powder, composts, diluted cow dung solution, cow urine, vermiwash, germinated groundnut cake solution etc. are ideal fertilisers.
Use newspaper for mulching to control weed growth.
Prune the diseased and dried branches of plants like okra and brinjal to allow new branches to emerge fast.
After every season, refill the flowerpots or growbags with fresh potting mix.
