Thrissur family cultivates spinach, Chinese potato in pipe
Mannuthy (Thrissur): Anchery Chira native Antony and family are happy as their innovative farming method proved to be successful. They planted spinach and Chinese potato in two pipes that have a circumference of 25 inches.
The pipes were bought for kitchen waste management. When they became useless later, Antony tried the new method of cultivation. The pipes occupy only one foot space.
First, about 40 holes should be drilled on the pipe. Then it is filled with soil, cow dung powder and coconut husk. The seeds bought from the farm of Agricultural University was germinated. When the saplings are replanted, the spinach and Chinese potato stems are placed in the holes on the pipes.
Antony pours only two cups of water for the plants every day. Groundnut cake mixed in boiled rice water was provided as fertilizer once in a week. Red spinach harvested once was taken for household purpose. Antony cultivates spinach in PVC pipe canal, on terrace and compound walls also.
Antony and family are part of the Kitchen Garden group of St Don Bosco Church in Mariyapuram. Working in a private company, Antony spends his leisure time maintaining kitchen garden. His wife Ancy and children George, Sandra and John Bosco also help him in taking care of the vegetable plants.
