Percussionist turns inventor; develops ‘low cost areca nut peeler’
A new easy areca nut peeler developed by Kozhikode Panthalayani native Ramakrishnan has become popular for its simplicity and affordability. The tiny equipment is of high demand in agricultural fests.
Compared to other areca nut peelers, this equipment is very easy to use and less expensive. The peeler developed by Ramakrishnan costs only Rs 500. The equipment is introduced to the market with the help of Raidco (Regional Agro Industrial Development Co-operative of Kerala).
According to Ramakrishnan, the peeler does not get rusted or damaged as it does not have an iron spring. Up to 1500 areca nuts can be peeled in one hour using this peeler. Ramakrishnan developed and manufactured the equipment at a workshop in his house. He developed the parts of the equipment on his own.
Though Ramakrishnan wants to start a manufacturing unit, financial difficulties is a barrier before him. Now he is on a mission to develop a coconut peeler and affordable areca palm climber. A talented Mridangam-Tabala percussionist, Ramakrishnan spares his leisure time after concerts to develop the equipment.
