P J Joseph's son experiments with jute sack pond for fish farming
Thodupuzha (Idukki): MLA P J Joseph's son Appu Joseph is trying new farming techniques in his land at Purappuzha here. A pond is being constructed using jute sacks or gunny bags for irrigation and fish farming. The farm pond has a length of 40 metres, width 20 metres and depth of 15 metres.
About 2000 jute sacks and 170 sack full of cement is required for construction. 60 percent of the work has been completed. Compared to concrete ponds, the expense for making jute sack ponds is very low.
Earlier, a tarpaulin pond was here 20 years ago and it was destroyed later. Recently, Appu Joseph came to know about jute sack ponds from Haritha Keralam Mission district coordinator Dr G S Madhu. He visited Madhu's residence and saw the jute sack pond there which was 20 feet long, 10 feet wide and 5 feet deep.
Following this, Appu decided to experiment with jute sack pond for fish farming. He plans to cultivate 5000 tilapia fishes in the pond in cage culture. Many jute sack ponds were constructed in Rajakumari panchayat in the special interest of agriculture officer as part of water conservation activities.
