Online farming lessons by Hindi teacher becomes a hit among students during lockdown
Kakkanad (Ernakulam): As the students are sitting idle at their homes during lockdown, Saritha Teacher decided to give them some farming lessons via online. K R Saritha is a teacher at Mar Thoma School at Edachira in Kakkanad. She introduced farming in her house to her students of class 9 along with giving Hindi lessons to them. Saritha is also Mathrubhumi Seed coordinator.
The farming lessons are given through WhatsApp group. The students should also try it at their houses. Saritha introduced farming at her house at Peringala in Pallikkara through videos and pictures. She taught the students how to sow seeds, irrigate saplings and other tips in farming. She also gave them guidelines to start rooftop farming if no space is available in the courtyard.
Vegetables like long beans, okra and spinach which can be easily cultivated were suggested for the children. As the students were motivated and started farming at their houses, the online agriculture class became a big hit. Mar Thoma school management also encouraged the students. They sent pictures and videos of their farming results through WhatsApp and discussed their experiences.
Saritha's husband V A Vijayakumar, an engineer at FACT in Ambalamukal, and daughter Sandra, a Plus Two student at St Mary's Higher Secondary School in Morakkala, also support her in farming.
