Machine to harvest Chinese potato, turmeric, ginger introduced; saves labour charge, time
Peramangalam (Thrissur): An agricultural equipment to harvest Chinese potato has been introduced to the relief of farmers. The machine can be attached to tractor and operated easily in farms. The manufacturing of the machine started 6 years ago and its final touch was progressing in the last 2 years.
Presently, Chinese potato is harvested manually by digging the soil with spade. Harvesting one kilogram of Chinese potato costs Rs 20. Wage for one labourer is Rs 800-1000 per day. The new machine can be used for harvesting turmeric and ginger too. It has been designed for this purposes also.
The machine was designed and modified by Prof Dr Jayan P R, head of Farm Machinery Department at Tavanur Kelappaji College of Agricultural Engineering and Technology, and Basavarajan through researches.
The machine was used successfully to harvest Chinese potato cultivated in one-acre land of Chittilapally native Haneesh which comes under Thrissur Paddy Farmers Producers Limited. With this, labour charge can be reduced by 90 percent. Making cost of the machine is about Rs 60,000.
