Kozhikode duo's 'Royal Karikku' becomes a hit
Kochi: Amid the local tender coconuts, there is a ‘king’ wearing a robe and crown. The ‘Royal’ tender coconut is totally a new gen item that can be easily carried during journeys without any mess. The stylish ‘Royal Karikku’ is the brainchild of Kozhikode native Sadakkathulla and Abdul Shameer.
The duo collects local varieties of tender coconut. The tag attached to the tender coconut shows the harvest date and the expiry date of the product. The outer husk of the coconut is removed using a machine. A narrow hole is drilled so that the buyer can easily drink the coconut water using straw. The hole is safely closed with a wooden cork.
When the cork is pressed downwards, the hole opens and coconut water can be consumed. ‘Royal Karikku’ can be used for one week when stored in normal temperature and for two weeks in cold storage. As the husk is removed, the tender coconut can be carried easily even while travelling.
The marketing system is arranged in a way that ensures more amount for the farmers. One tender coconut costs Rs 59. As an initial offer, it is given for Rs 49. Tender coconut is collected from the farmers in Kozhikode. In the next phase, coconut will be collected from Palakkad Attappady region.
