Kalpa crunch, nutribar, coconut paneer; coconut farmers can earn from value added products too
As it is hard to make profit from only selling coconut nowadays, coconut farmers should also focus on value added products from coconut. Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (CPCRI) in Kasaragod has developed new technologies for this purpose. Agencies like Coconut Development Board also are providing financial assistance for the new ventures.
Snowball from tender coconut, chips from ripe coconut, squash and vinegar from palm nectar (Neera), virgin coconut oil, coconut powder, coconut milk powder, squash from coconut water etc are already available in market. As the trends in food changes over time, CPCRI is trying to introduce new products.
Coconut paneer is made by coconut milk is heated with soy milk or milk powder. By the time it reaches boiling point, lime essence is added to curdle the milk.
This is a nutritious product made of pure coconut milk. No cow milk or milk powder is added in this. 30 percent of the product is coconut milk and the rest is tender coconut water, flesh of tender coconut, grated coconut and sugar.
Kalpa Crunch is a crunchy snack made by adding rice flour and corn flour in coconut pulp left after extracting the milk. It can be made in different flavours.
Bean to bar chocolate is produced by sugar made from palm nectar (Neera) and cocoa beans.
Nutribar is made by condensing palm nectar (Neera) and adding groundnut, green gram and cocoa powder in it.
Honey, jaggery, sugar
Palm nectar is condensed by heating it at 115 degree Celsius to produce honey, sugar and jaggery. Heating palm nectar in different levels of temperature makes these products. One kilogram sugar can be made from 7 litres of palm nectar.
This contains more amount of iron, magnesium and zinc compared to the sugar produced from sugarcane. It also contains many vitamins, minerals and amino acids which make it a nutritious product.
