CFTRI introduces simple trick to preserve tomato; costs only Rs 3 per kg
Surplus production and price drop mostly affects tomato as it easily perishes. Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI) in Mysuru has introduced a simple solution to preserve tomatoes at affordable rate.
Keeping tomatoes in a polythene cover filled with a solution with 4 percent of salt is the method suggested by CFTRI to preserve tomatoes. Small scale farmers can keep tomatoes in covers that can contain 1 kilogram upto 3-4 months in room temperature. As microbes do not develop in brine water, tomato will not perish.
The farmers can sell these tomatoes later when the price goes up. In this method, only Rs 3 need to spent for preserving 1 kilogram of tomato. If the tomatoes are kept in the exact type of polythene cover and degree of temperature recommended by the CFTRI, it will give better result, the officials said. No refrigeration is required.
CFTRI is experimenting the technology in other types of vegetables too. They are also ready to share the technology with farmers for free. Karnataka government made an agreement with CFTRI to procure tomatoes on a commercial basis utilising the technology.
